ADSactly Folklore: Predicting the future
Predicting the future
Hello, friends of @adsactly
Since the world exists, man has felt the need and curiosity to know his future, not only to know, but to change it, transform it. When a person has contact with these practices, he does so because he believes in them, in the previous writing of a destiny, and in the clairvoyant power of the one who says he can read the future: the fortune teller.
Throughout the world and history there are many fortune tellers that we have known and read about. For example, the Greeks believed that divination was more than predicting the future; it was also a means by which gods could communicate with men. Through this divination the divine will was known. There is the case of the famous Tiresias, a blind old man who revealed to Oedipus the tragedies that awaited him; but there is also Nostradamus, who despite saying that he was not a prophet, is one of the most famous seers in history and is credited with predicting the Second World War, the fall of the Twin Towers and the death of Princess Diana, for example.
Venezuelans, perhaps because of their African and indigenous roots, are very believers and practice this type of activities. As in other countries, they use tarot, throw snails, read coffee grounds and the hand, practice numerology, astrology, but also use other rituals to know the future. I would like to mention the most known and used:
Deciphering dreams
The Venezuelan is an expert deciphering dreams. Just as he knows precisely the characteristics of the signs of the zodiac, so he knows the meaning of dreaming with some elements. This practice, so deeply rooted in popular areas of the country, has a lot to do with gambling, since dreams can not only tell us things, they can also make us win the lottery. Without the need for any study, but with a repeated and accurate practice of divination, people often risk interpreting their own dreams and those of others from some symbols or element. For example, if someone dreams of a snake, it is believed that there is a hidden pregnancy. If the snake bites you or comes at you, it is a family member or a very close person who is pregnant. Similarly, if a person dreams of lice, it is that times of economic abundance will come; not so when we dream of dry branches, which mean poverty. The one who dreams that his teeth fall out, is because he will suffer for the death of a loved one and if he dreams of partying, it is also certain death. Sometimes the fame of this type of prediction has been because it is expressed after the event; that is to say, there is always a person who says, after the death of an acquaintance: Yesterday I dreamt of a party or that my teeth fell out and that is death.
Reading the letters
In Venezuela, although the tarot can be read, the most deeply rooted custom is that of reading the cards of the common deck. This common deck is the Spanish one, which has four designs: Gold, which represents fortune; Sword, which symbolizes misfortune; Bastos, which evokes love and fertility; and Copas, which has to do with health. The person who is going to be consulted and who wants to know his future, must split the deck of cards with the left hand and distribute it in three piles. The cartomantic must interpret each card that comes out, according to his position and the questions that are asked. Each card should be placed on the table according to an order and then related according to the degree of proximity in which they have been arranged. At the end, the cartomantic will make his prediction or prognosis.
Tobacco Reading
This is another of the most popular practices when it comes to knowing the future and what life has to offer. Tobacco is not only used to know the destiny of a person, but is often used in "witchcraft" to get a job, attract the loved one and even sicken the enemy. In the case of divination, which is what concerns us, when smoking tobacco must take into account the smoke, ashes and even the different shapes or figures that appear in the tobacco, as all these signs will help us to decipher the fate. For example, if the taste and smell of tobacco are unpleasant, we can predict illness and even death; however, if the smell and taste are pleasant, the person consulted is clean of evils and has a promising future. All reading begins with the crown and then continues with the rest. If the tip is white, it is synonymous with happiness; if there are black dots, it is separation; and if there is a large black spot, sickness or death reappears. Ideally, people who read tobacco should expect the ash to fall off on its own because this also has meaning. In Venezuela there are still indigenous people who do not go out hunting without first smoking tobacco to see if it is worth going out, if there will be good hunting or on the contrary, some danger awaits them. Also, there is a famous song called Maria Rodriguez's Tobacco Prayer, which talks about the power of tobacco to do witchcraft.
It is said that in 1803, when Simón Bolívar, the Liberator of Venezuela and all of America, began his married life and did not yet think of the great wars that awaited him, a woman threw herself at his feet and predicted many triumphs, decorations, but also pain and death. A few years later, each one of the things that that woman predicted for her, happened one after the other. Likewise, it is said that the Grand Marshal of Ayacucho, another great Venezuelan hero, was also visited by an Indian fortune-teller who prophesied his early death in Berruecos. Two great stories that prove that there are people with powers to see beyond the present and that encourage this type of belief in people.

These practices, which are part of Venezuelan folklore and have their expressions in Santeria and Spiritism, have also become for many years a way of earning a living and a business. Many groups dedicated to the practice of smoking tobacco, reading letters, coffee grounds and even water, have their tariffs exposed to the public that requests these services in search of knowing or predicting what will happen to them in the future. I have read that there are people who can pay large amounts of money in rituals in order to protect themselves from bad energies and to solve personal and economic problems, Very good post, @nancybriti, thank you for sharing these contents. Thank you @adsactly for spreading it.
In fact, from time to time, I have observed that devotees or followers of Santeria have proliferated, many of them people who are in power or the government. It is said that the late President Hugo Chávez was a frequent practitioner of esoteric rituals and that on one occasion a Santero predicted his early death. That's the way things are. Greetings, @aurodivys.
A cultural practice with a ritual character that is very typical of ancient cultures; I believe there is none that does not possess it, from the Greek oracles to the Yanomami shamans. In the Caribbean, another practice of consultation and divination, which is not very common in Venezuela, is that of throwing out snails. The Mayas did it with corn grains.
Thank you for your informative and gratifying post, @nancybriti. Greetings.
I believe that practice comes from man's desire to know his destiny, to trap and know his reality; therefore, they not only existed but will exist forever, because curiosity is an innate quality of the human being that survives in time. Thank you for your comment, @josemalavem.
