The period of history which is commonly called "modern" has a mental outlook which differs from that of the medieval period in many ways. Of these, two are the most important: the diminishing authority of the Church, and the increasing authority of science. With these two, others are connected. The culture of modern times is more lay than clerical. States increasingly replace the Church as the governmental authority that controls culture. The government of nations is, at first, mainly in the hands of kings; then, as in ancient Greece, the kings are gradually replaced by democracies or tyrants. The Power steadily throughout the whole period (apart from some minor fluctuations); but at most times the the State has less influence on the opinions of philosophers than the Church had in the Middle Ages.
역사에서 modern현대라고 말하는 period시기는 in many ways여러 가지 점에서 medieval period중세기와 판이한 정신적인 특징을 갖고 있으며, 이 가운데서 important중요한 것이 두 가지 있다. 그것은 diminishing쇠퇴해 가는 교회의 authority권위와 increasing강대해 가는 science과학의 권위이다. 이밖의 여러 가지 특징들은 모두 이 두 가지 특징과 connected관련되어 있다.
현대 문화는 clerical교회적이라기보다 오히려 lay세속적이다. 국가가 중세기의 교회대신에 통치권을 차지하고 문화를 통제하게 되었다. 각 민족의 정부는 처음에는 주로 왕들이 손에 넣고 있었으나, 나중에는 ancient고대의 그리스에 있어서와 마찬가지로 왕들은 gradually차츰 democracies민주주의와 tyrants전제 군주로 replaced대체되었다. 국가의 power권력과, 이 권력이 차지하는 여러 가지 기능은 점점 강대하여 갔으나, 국가는 대체로 Middle Ages중세기에 교회가 끼친 influenced영향만큼 철학자들의 opinions견해에 영향을 끼치지는 못하였다.
