Smoking is one of the activities that many people do almost all over the world.

Various types of cigarettes from kretek, filters, cigarettes with menthol taste, to electric cigarettes are now easily found and become part of human life. However, since when did humans start the habit of smoking cigarettes?

The history of cigarettes began in South America in 4,000 BC. At that time, smoking or chewing tobacco
is part of the shamanic ritual.

Only a few centuries later tobacco was introduced on mainland Europe. After Christopher Columbus became the first European to find tobacco plants.

Europeans then brought tobacco to various places using ships.

Then, the sailors imitated the habits of Aboriginal tribes who used tobacco to smoke by being compacted into pipes or cigars.

tobacco that is famous for its fragrant aroma, it turns out not only can be enjoyed by being sucked, but also by inhaled. This second method is considered more environmentally friendly because it does not produce cigarette smoke.

In fact, inhaling tobacco is believed to cure colds and treat inflammation of the nose. This method is widely used in nations in Asia, Africa, America and parts of Europe.

One more way to enjoy tobacco, which is by chewing. This is a habit that is spread among American farmers. Today, the habit of chewing tobacco is often done by baseball athletes.

Tobacco use then develops by putting tobacco into a special paper that is rolled by hand

cigarettes were found. Quickly this new way of enjoying tobacco spread and was initially very popular with sailors and soldiers.

In 1830 the tobacco rolled on paper arrived in France and this country also found the term cigarette or cigarette first.

However, the first patented cigarette making machine was made by Juan Nepomuceno Adorno from Mexico in 1847.

Nevertheless new cigarette production skyrocketed after a new engine was developed by James Albert Bonsack from the United States in the 1880s.

This Bonsack machine can boost cigarette production from only 40,000 sticks to around 4 million cigarettes a day.

Cigarette users increased rapidly in the Western world in the 20th century. For example, in the US at the beginning of the 20th century, consumption of cigarettes averaged only 54 cigarettes per person each year.

However, in 1965 cigarette consumption in the United States jumped to 4,295 cigarettes per capita per year. At that time 50 percent of men and 30 percent of women spent 100 cigarettes a year.

In 2000, cigarette consumption in the US dropped to 2,092 cigarettes per person per year. And in 2016 it dropped to 1,691 cigarettes per person per year.

However, globally the number of cigarette consumption in the world is still very high, reaching 5.7 trillion cigarettes a year.

In developed countries the number of connoisseurs indeed continues to decline, but not so in developing countries where the number of cigarette users is increasing.
