Thank for the details. One tool I have used for building an app frontend is Appcelerator Titanium. I only used it once and not sure it's suitability for a project like this, but I do remember it being useful to quickly add the graphical/UI elements required for an app and corresponding functionality. It has built-in framework for setting up mobile buttons/tables/sliders etc. Just thought I would mention it :D
