CLEANING OUT MY FOLLOWING LIST AND WHY!!!
Here are some of my personal reasons and reasoning behind what I've started doing :)
When I started with Steemit I was pretty much clueless as to what is going on and what to do. I received many of the "Follow me, I'll follow you" type of responses and I was like "Great, yeah man, you're on!!!" This was one of my first mistakes... most of these kind of Steemians don't give a damn... unless they are completely unaware like I was.
So the reasoning for me personally is quality, not quantity. I can go down the follow for follow path but then my feed will be filled with content that doesn't mean anything to me. When I go on Steemit the first thing I do is check my feed. I like to see what is there that has some meaning to me in one way or another and then I support it as best I can. If it's filled with useless (to me) content then I can't support those I feel deserve it.
So what did I do?
I checked my current following and selected those I felt won't be adding value to me by the following criteria:
1- You are following THOUSANDS of steemians. You probably won't notice my content. Unless your content, in itself, interests me I stopped following you.
2- Your content isn't of any benefit to me personally. It doesn't help me or you if it's displayed on my feed.
So that is about it for now. As I learn and develop more I could add more selection criterias i.e. upvoting yourself ;) and so on.
I'm still very young and fresh here so there's still plenty to learn. I don't believe what I've stated here is incorrect or wrong. Should your opinion differ please let me know :)
I know I might lose some followers by doing this but in that case, "We weren't meant to be :):)"

Second Edit: Just to let you guys know... adding value to me isn't just about your blog/content. It's about your comments to me and my comments to you :) and all of the other stuffs :):)
You are 100% correct. Upvoted! It's practically impossible to read every post in your feed if you follow too many people.
It might cost you one or two followers, but certainly not me and I concur this is the right strategy!
It just makes no sense to follow everyone that follows you. I think I'm going to make a anti-follow-for-follow meme, just to answer everyone that requires me to follow them, just because they follow me...

I completely agree with your strategy. I try to follow only people who have similar goals. Then I look for people who will lift me up, not bring me down, inspiration and wisdom wise.
It is funny too because you may not be following me. haha (I am on my phone and cannot easily check atm)
I am here to share my residential security expertise and a little about private investigation. It is a good niche for me, and I believe thousands of Steemians will find my content valuable.
Good man, well said!!! To me the other approach of follow for follow, garnering as many followers as you can and so on, just isn't sensible. Steemit is based on quality, not quantity so some people need to realise that and then they'll do just fine. Much appreciated your comment and upvote @finnian :):)
Luckily I didn't join SteemIt with the intentions of trying to see how many followers I could acquire as if it were Twitter.
I totally agree with what you are saying, and since the beginning I have told people even in chat who ask for follows to drop me a PM with their blog link, and if I like their content I will follow them.
I'm not here to just see a huge follow2follower count, I want followers who actually interact and are genuinely interested or entertained by the content I provide. I also

As an even younger steemit ;) I've started thinking along the same lines, do not like the kind of bribery ie follow me and I will follow you. Was also excited about growing my followers, but like you, would like to have my feed filled with content I would like to read, and not have to filter out non relevant stuff, so I totally agree and will most likely be 'cleaning up' my list soon! Am slowly learning to swim in this vast ocean :)

, I'm still very much an infant here and can only say what I think... what's important to me is the fact that I'm enjoying it. It has provided me with loads of positivity and realism. It's simply a great platform provided it's used with the right intentions. Your intentions may be different to mine.
