About Super Blue Blood Moon
Why is the name so complicated?
Named 'super blue blood moon' because the event is a combination of three moon phenomena at once. 'Supermoon' because the Moon will be at its closest distance to Earth (perigee), so it looks 14% bigger and 30% brighter than usual. The 'blue moon' is the nickname for the full moon that appears the second time in a calendar month. On January 31 there will also be a lunar eclipse, an event when the Sun, Earth, and Moon are on parallel lines.
The moon will be covered with the shadow of the Earth, making it look red like blood, so it is called 'blood moon'. This is because sunlight penetrates the Earth's atmosphere before it reaches the Moon. Gases in the atmosphere scatter blue light and pass red light. The occurrence of these three phenomena simultaneously is a rare occurrence, the last time occurred 152 years ago.
