RE: barbara4u2c, YouTube, and the Culture of Flagging (I Will Burn the Rewards of This Post, This is Made for Visibility for the Issue)

And a quick remark about culture and the reference to "Amusing ourselves to death", I was surprised to find this reference, most people never heard of it.

Anyway, entertaining the masses to keep them quiet has been a proven means of control since the Romans, we only do this on a much larger scale nowadays.

The abundance of entertainment, information and stimuli causes for a generation that looses its identity and no longer thinks for itself.

Sort:

Yeah, most people have never heard of it. I think everybody's always been so afraid of Orwell's dystopia that Postman's dystopia kinda got to happen while everybody was looking the other way.

I would take this one step further: Maybe governments aren't the problem, and have never been. They are easy targets, of course, and cursing them pleases the us-versus-them crowds, but the real problem is and always has been the morals and culture of the majority. Pointing at governments is easy, looking at ourselves is quite a bit harder. In the western world, we are all governed by corporations anyway, and they only survive by the grace of us voters, consumers and employees.

You know. Lately, I've been starting to see things that way, as well. I have my gripes with governments still, but I do think you may be on to something.

You see it happen all around you. When people are mostly interested in Kardashian's, "real-life" television and Jerry Springer-types of shows, you know we're a society doomed to fail.

And it may very well be the inevitable cycle of societies, as Rome showed. Time will tell. God knows we never seem to evolve as beings past a certain point.
