What to do with 300 Drones?

in #youtube7 years ago

Intel has an answer for that question….make them all dance in the night sky and do cool aerobatics while at the same time managing not to collide with one another, and also putting on a very fun light show.

Think that’s was impossible, think again.
The business team at Intel’s New Technology Group has a very lightweight drone designed for aerial light displays and it’s called ‘Shooting Star Drone’. which weighs in at a mere 330grams (less than a soda can).

The Shooting Star Drone is very lightweight, so if it fell it wouldn’t really hurt (or is less likely to cause serious damage to) a human or animal.

Intel had a display featuring 100 drones in early 2016, then they made the jump to 300 Shooting Star Drones in displays for the ‘Super Bowl LI’ half time show, and Coachella this year.

Tomorrow in Singapore to celebrate 52 years, Intel will again be showcasing their Shooting Star Drones in yet another exciting choreographed light display.

Intel did in fact (briefly) hold the Guinness World Record for drones flying in formation,
that title has now gone to eHuang who trounced Intel by flying 1000 drones (yes, ONE THOUSAND DRONES!) in a choreographed light display.

Intel are still far behind in flying formation drones for aerial light displays though, recently in China, the company called eHuang flew in formation 1000 of their GhostDrone 2.0 model drone for the Chinese Lantern Festival.

The model they flew in China looks much heavier (wouldn’t want to be hit by any falling from the sky). So maybe Intel will be overall winner if they catch up to the numbers the eHuang is flying….what will their next jump be 1500 or more maybe.

As of now eHuang hold on to the Guinness world Record for most simultaneously flying drones in the air at one time for 1000 drones.

The trend was obvious several years ago with swarms of relatively just a few units, it is all a matter of scaling and rapid processing of the mesh communications- in 2014 at Harvard they were working with 2^10 arrays (1024 members), and I've no doubt the Chinese universities were at least at that level. The very basic AI is derived from the size of the array, given the advisability of keeping the computational hardware of the members very light.

They use GPS also so that has to be all operational too. I think China will be the big winner (they make most drones) and can make the tech really really cheaply.

These lightshow drones are a good idea, much more environmentally friendly than fireworks, although to match the big shows they will need many thousands, 500 or 100 or even probably 5000 not be woud be enough.
Great post, thanks for the share.
