It's Christmas Time: What are your favorite movies? [TOP 03]

in #yourtop34 years ago

When it comes to talking about Christmas movies, it is not so difficult (at least for me) to make a list of the best movies that portray this magical time in its most diverse forms. The examples are many and the hard part is to make such a short selection, containing only 3 names.

But, well... Let's do this!

I could name some of the most classic ones like Home Alone or The Grinch, for example (which are certainly among my favorites too), but to enter this contest I decided to walk off the radar and bring in some titles that are not so well remembered - at least they are not usually people's first choices - and deserve attention

My idea in choosing to focus on the following movies is to make them remember by those who already know them (with the intention of making the good memories can be felt again) or to make them known to people who have not watched them yet.

You can be sure that all these movies that I'm going to talk about below are very worthwhile (especially to be watched or re-watched at Christmas time). So, please read it and watch them as soon as possible. ;)

In no particular order (because I like them all)...

It's a Wonderful Life (1946)

Amazon

Synopsis: Clarence is an angel candidate spirit who is tasked with helping a very valiant but disillusioned man. George Bailey is on the brink of suicide when he is saved by Clarence, who shows him how important he is in many people's lives.

Well, there are so many awesome aspects in this movie (you have to immerse yourself in the story to capture all its essence)... But, what I like most about here is the playful, simple and fun way writers have found to portray so faithfully some dilemmas. Among them, the great importance that a ordinary person can have in the life of other people (whether they are strangers or people close to your social / family life).

Starring James Stweart (in one of his best performances... at a time when he was not even well known for his future successes) and masterfully directed by Frank Capra, this movie has an extremely important message that should be absorbed by everyone: we are all special in our own way - no matter how peculiar we may be - and we should all have aware of it.

This movie is humorous proof (very well built along the projection) that every human being should take a closer look at themselves, to the goals they want to achieve and the people they want to care about

The Polar Express (2014)

Amazon

*Synopsis: When a doubtful boy takes an extraordinary ride to the North Pole, he embarks on a journey of self-discovery that shows him that the wonder of life never disappears for those who believe.

What matters most in this movie is the power that Christmas has directly in children's belief about this time when magic is simply inexplicable in their eyes. It is also worth mentioning that the approach of the movie is seen by the innocent eyes of children (which makes the plot even more sensitive and important) and between the lines, you can see the writers' efforts to keep the flame of the traditional values of this era ever more alive (not only for the children themselves, but also for the adults)..

Directed by Robert Zemecks with a very personal and intimate look about the true value of Christmas and having Tom Hanks as one of the main names in the cast, this movie is not just another Christmas movie like so many titles... It's a movie (very well made) that goes a little further because it was made precisely with the idea of rescuing the symbology that this special time carries over the years of its existence.

Edward Scissorhands (1990)

Amazon

Synopsis: Edward is a young man who lives alone in a mountain-top castle created by an inventor who died before holding hands with the strange being, who has only huge blades in place of them. He is eventually discovered by a friendly and welcoming saleswoman. From that meeting on, their lives will change.

In this unusual Christmas narrative, the great and most remarkable lesson is learning to live with someone who is different from you (no matter how "strange" that person is). Undoubtedly, it is a very sentimental story even though it is built on somewhat obscure ground.

You can also consider this as a story about an unlikely love between two people so different (and at the same time complement each other so well in their goals) that has many punctual backgrounds, among them, the intolerance of prejudiced people (and how they can benefit from this situation) and the welcoming of people who are more open minded and more respectful.

The big partnership between actors Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder (their chemistry is automatic and the characters are great) coupled with the work done by director Tim Burton (by the way, this is one of the best and most inspired works of his career) results in a fantastic movie with outstanding quality excellence.

As you may notice, not all the movies that I include on my list talk about Christmas itself, but somehow they have a special connection to this time (and they don't have to talk about the party itself to be looked at this way) and are great recommendations for enjoying one of the most anticipated parties of the year.

É um clássico, haha!

Excellent choices @wiseagent! So nice to see a new face join us for the contest! I was just talking with @foxyspirit about Edward Scissorhands, so I'm tickled to see it make the list. Now I have the itch to watch it again as it has been many years since I've seen it. The other two are awesome films, as well. I really need to sit down and watch It's a Wonderful Life in its entirety as I think I usually only catch bits and pieces. Thanks for bringing these to the contest this month!

Thank you for the welcome reception. But I think my options are not so popular to win.

Well... Who knows, right? Haha!

Awesome choices,

Good luck in the polls!

Hey @wiseagent

Welcome to the Top3 contest. We are always excited to have new contestants.

Right off the bat I want to say that you have absolutely nailed the essence of what this contest is about. Picking 3 items from a given topic that mean a lot to you and then giving us your explanation. Great job. I love the post.

Your choices are classy. I chose The Polar Express too. Such a beautifully made film for all ages. We watch this movie on our Christmas tree day and it holds a special place in our hearts. Absolutely magical.

I have only watch It's a Wonderful Life once and it was quite a while ago. I remember it having that powerful message and a very emotional climax. Some of the subject matter is very dark though. I don't know if you have ever watched the British sitcom Red Dwarf but it is Lister's favourite movie. He's usually balling his eyes out while watching it.

I confess that I have never watched Edward Scissorhands. I certainly never realised that it had Christmas links. Maybe I will find the time to watch it.

Thanks again for your efforts. Definitely come and join us on our discord and we can all chat about movies till the cows come home! 😁
