Yahya Sinwar was in Israeli custody, and was released as part of the 1000+ prisoners that were exchanged for Gilad Shalit in 2011.

Releasing thousands of jailed Palestinians in exchange for to remaining October 7th hostages is going to result in the death of thousands of Israelis and tens of thousands of Gazans.

The only hope of a lasting peace is to eliminate Hamas in much the same way the Nazis were eliminated.

It is not possible to “save” the hostages in a prisoner swap: you can only trade their lives for further death and destruction a few years from now. This is the “Trolley Problem” writ large.
