Why Sami Zayn is a better heel...

I haven't been able to follow all of WWE's shows, but I've enjoyed following certain wrestlers and their storylines. One of the wrestlers I've enjoyed watching is Sami Zayn.

Sami Zayn rose from the indies and became one of the darlings of WWE's NXT brand. He's been a constant underdog and a lovable good guy. In NXT, he's constantly fought hard for respect. While he's not always the strongest, the most talented, the biggest, or the most athletic among his peers, he's always made up for it through tenacity and a "never give up" attitude. His drive for respect drove him to lay it all on the line to get the NXT championship. And he reached the height of his success! He won the NXT championship after a hard-fought match and it would have been a great run if it wasn't cut short by the betrayal of his former best friend, Kevin Owens. Still, Sami persevered and ended his NXT stint as a beloved wrestler.

But something was different when he went up to the main WWE roster. Now, in the land of the superstars, it seemed as if everyone is always better than Sami. He kept losing and losing and losing. Worse, the fans were not getting behind him any longer. As an underdog, Sami used to have the support of the NXT crowd, but the main roster cheered winners.

To add insult to injury, his best friend turned nemesis, Kevin Owens, is now on the main roster as well... but there's a major difference: Kevin Owens is thriving. Kevin Owens won championships. Kevin Owens gets the main event matches. Kevin Owens is successful as a dastardly heel.

Sami saw this and agreed. Maybe it was time to turn his back on the crowd. It was time to look out for himself. The new Sami Zayn is the same person as he's always been, but just able to tell when something would benefit Sami.

It's working. I personally love the new heel Sami Zayn. He's annoying and smug AF and he's entertaining. He still pulls off the impressive feats of wrestling, but now, his character is given the chance to shine with the main eventers.

Plus, he's making use of his old tools, the old-fashioned hat and the annoyingly poppy music, in new ways as a heel. He's getting more mileage out of them. Amazing.

Go dance away, heel Sami! I hope you win the big one one of these days.
