How close are we to nuclear war?

in #ww36 years ago

The doomsday clock was set to 2 minutes to midnight.

The doomsday clock is a symbolic clock that was setup by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientist and it's meant to show us how close we are to a world wide catastrophy.
And it's now set to two minutes to midnight.
This is 30 seconds closer than last year, and this is the closest it's been to global midnight since 1953 at the height of the cold war.
This according to the Bulletin of Atomic Scientist is caused by for example the following.

In 2017, world leaders failed to respond effectively to the looming threats of nuclear war and climate change, making the world security situation more dangerous than it was a year ago—and as dangerous as it has been since World War II.

And

North Korea’s nuclear weapons program made remarkable progress in 2017, increasing risks to North Korea itself, other countries in the region, and the United States.

This makes me feel uneasy. I live in Finland, Finland is quite peaceful generally and we don't invest heavily in our military. And especially being a small nation we cannot defend ourselves against nuclear attack or retaliate. And current world leaders are acting recklessly like trump tweeting.

North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un just stated that the “Nuclear Button is on his desk at all times.” Will someone from his depleted and food starved regime please inform him that I too have a Nuclear Button, but it is a much bigger & more powerful one than his, and my Button works!

This is not OK. Something has to change.
And in the 2018 doomsday clock statement the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientist also included

The Science and Security Board is deeply concerned about the loss of public trust in political institutions, in the media, in science, and in facts themselves—a loss that the abuse of information technology has fostered. Attempts to intervene in elections through sophisticated hacking operations and the spread of disinformation have threatened democracy

This referring to Russian interference in the 2016 United States elections And the Fake news movement that seems to pop up quite often.
The world doesn't seem that bad but when you think about it we have reckless world leaders who are unwilling or unable to calm down and seek peaceful political solutions to problems in the world.
I don't know. I'm no expert but i don't want to die and would really like to leave something behind for future generations.

In all Fairness, the North Korea situation isn‘t any worse with Trump as president. They have conducted missile tests all those years anyway, so why keep trying to appease them?

North Korea has nothing to gain and everything to lose if they should actually use their nukes , so I would say the fear over it is overblown.
