Würzburgs most attractive sight for visitors and residents 🍇

How many photos are tolerable in one post? And how many photos are necessary to illustrate how fantastic a topic is? (in my personal opinion at least! )

Be prepared to watch many photos in this post of mine! I would like to introduce you to a relatively new but extremely popular sight in Würzburg. It is the Alte Mainbrücke (The Old Main Bridge). Wait! How can it be 'New' when it is called 'Old'? By the way it claims to be the oldest bridge over the river Main! It was erected from 1473 to 1543. It is a pedestrian bridge, only bicycles are allowed. It connects Würzburg's old town with the former fishermen's quarter on the left side of the Main river where the big fortress Festung Marienberg is located.

What makes the old bridge new, is a phenomenon that appeared within the recent years after two new locations (a restaurant and a wine bar) opend their doors right on the bridge. It has become one of the city's prime meeting spots for socializing and spending a good time with old and new friends. Especially on warm summer nights visitors blend with locals and enjoy the lively and chummily atmosphere whilst sipping a glass of Franconian wine. 

I can't remember correctly when exactly it became so big but on warm summer evenings it seems to be impossible to cross the river over this bridge because it is so crowded by winedrinking laughing and chatting people. Very often street musicians propose their talents to the around standing . Sometimes, when the rising Würzburg Band Puente Latino play their music, people even dance Salsa! So far about german Spießigkeit! 😜 No existing at all!

From the bridge you have a beautiful sight over the river to the Käppele, a pilgrimage church.

Over the bridge on the other side the impressive fortress Festung Marienberg overlooks the city.

The original waterwheel of the Old Main Mill, a building now hosting a restaurant.

Typical frankonian wines are Silvaner and Rotling.

Every now and then you see someone drinking a beer. Even this is tolerated! 😜 Not everyone is a wine lover!

For these people this is the place to go: right below the bridge is a place where you can order wine AND beer. So nobody has to go home thirsty! 😉

In the evenings spending time on the bridge is as popular as at daytime and it's often the place to start into a party night.
