There's no hocus-pocus here. People struggle within their minds about all kinds of things. Getting those things out can be the healing process needed to get over the struggle. In a perfect world everyone is on top of everything and addresses issues when they are small as @pqbd said. But we live in the reality that stuff gets tucked away because of fear, embarrassment or any host of reasons. Therapists can be extremely important for those of us that don't nip an issue in the bud early.
