5 Reasons Why Learning To Write Well Will Help You (Even If You're Not A Writer)

in #writing8 years ago

Yes I may be biased as a writer, but learning to communicate using the written word is more useful than you think in today's society. Even if you don't realize it, you are doing it for both your social and work life. Here are five reasons why putting in the effort to be a better writer can pay off.

1.) Text messages

lol. Yes text messages are, in a way, writing. I know people will scoff at this, and yes there is a HUGE difference between a text message and other forms of writing. But you are still communicating with words. Even if those words are shortened and interspaced with smiley emoticons. When you are sending a text, you are trying to say something. And just like in other forms of communication, you don't want your message to get lost in translation. How many times have you not articulated yourselves properly in a text and got a response you didn't expect. Sometimes it even leads to a fight. Or at least one person thinks its a fight. And this situation is even more likely to happen when it is someone you don't even know. Being able to type words the way you want them to be read will help with this, and least for most of the time.

2.) Social Media

Like it or hate it, social media is here to stay. And it is used for both business and social. I think we draw too much of a person from their profile page and pictures but it is the way things are. Your social media page is your way to put yourself out there and you will want to be able to write your posts properly so you at least seem like you have your stuff together.

3.) Email

A part of the modern day work environment includes emails. Those short messages that a lot of us do not like writing. But they are the way that businesses and clients communicate with each other and sometimes they are the only way. You don't want to lose business or have your boss think you may not be the right person for the job because you cannot properly string a sentence or two together. You don't need to be the next Shakespeare, but again, it comes down to being able to articulate your message properly.

4.) People notice bad spelling and grammar

I'm not one to freak out when people make grammar mistakes. Communication is a two way street and I feel the reciever should make the effort to understand the message and speaker. But some people will jump on you if you put there instead of their. Don't give them a reason. Master the language and show them you know your stuff.

5.) Resume

I think you are getting the point by now...
