My ex used to say something similar to what Ardin said, regarding politics: that he didn't wish to encourage them... I think that's the only part of my ex to turn up in this story.

And yes, the reference to "poor Orphan Ardin" is a direct play on the idea of "little Orphan Annie"... (I can have fun!)
