You're building up some suspense. I find it very difficult to write in narrative form, myself. I need to learn to give my characters voices of their own. It is more interesting if the reader becomes aware of how you felt, how you see yourself (as ordinary or insecure, unsure etc), by the way you react or the things you say. You come rather directly to a self-description - in a sense, your mind is made up that you were an ordinary guy. Certainly, some different event will challenge that self-description - here lies the suspense I guess. I look forward to reading more.
