Eva's Lament

Eva's Lament

Sir Joseph hovers near the moss-laden steps
That lead her down to the clearing each dusk,
Peering with sharpened vision through the misty
Curtain that divides his gray world from hers.

And she sits alone by the sun-bleached wall of
Fragmented rock, counting the years that have
Slipped away as neatly as each day's setting sun.
Fury boils gently within her gut and the mind
Twists and reverberates the sound of his voice.
The what-ifs refuse to grant her a singular moment
Of peace, a self imposed torture recanting events long
Past, however freshly salted her wounds might seem.
He can hear her thoughts as they tumble chaotically..
Would fate have turned a blind eye if only she had
Heeded his missive and hastened her journey?

Never will she know the beauty of her own strength,
Or the reason he cannot bear to step into the light.
