Tips To Reading Faster !!
Hello Steemians,
Reading is a process that involves word recognition, comprehension, word frequency as well as motivation. Reading can also be defined as the process of making meaning from a print. Reading has become a fundamental part of our society. Children are taught how to read from a very tender age and this is important since it helps develop their mind. They are also able to develop language skills as well as learning how to listen.
Most people are able to read 200 words per minute (wpm) which is the average or standard reading rate, they are however unable to exceed this number of words per minute. We however find that some people can read to around 300 words or more per minute and we are left with a question on the causes of this reading gap. My father always emphasized on the importance and benefits fast reader achieve. Learning things fast can be a massive advantage in life.
In order to improve our reading speed and be in a position to read faster while still understanding whatever we read, we need to follow these simple steps.
Scam.
For you to be a fast reader you have to learn how to scam. When we were taught how to read as young children we were told to focus on every single word. This however is not so necessary for the adults since research shows that adults have the ability to fill in the gaps after reading only the important words in a text. Scamming can help improve our reading especially as adults.
For paragraphs, read the first and the last in each paragraph.
Research has shown that many scholars and authors use a catchy sentence to introduce their paragraphs which contains most information on what the paragraph is about and they as well end paragraphs in sentences that summarizes all the paragraph’s information. Therefore by reading the first and the last sentence in each paragraph one has got nothing to lose in terms of the content.
Sub vocalization.
This is dominant especially in the young children and it involves sounding out of words when reading silently. This takes much of our time to say a word than we can understand it. If we are able to do away with this we can effectively improve our reading speed.
Use of pointers.
Pointers here may include a pencil or any other writing material or our own index finger. Mainly when we read without the use of pointers we often tend to go through the same material over and over again. Pointers helps us establish a good flow of where we are reading and helps save on time which would have been spent trying to trace where we were reading.
Multitasking.
This is one of the habits that slows down our reading speed. For example trying to listen to music while reading. This comes as a distraction. Avoiding multitasking while reading may help improve our reading speed.
Ask yourself several questions about the text before reading it.
This gives one a rough idea of what to expect from the text and thus helps the reader to go through the text faster.
Reading faster helps improves your memory, increases level of self-confidence, and boosts one’s knowledge as well as emotional well-being. The above simple steps will definitely help you overcome difficulties in reading fast. Become a fast reader by practicing them since practice makes perfect.

This is such an informative post and thank you for the information. What really knocks me out is a book that, when you're all done reading it, you wish the author that wrote it was a terrific friend of yours and you could call him up on the phone whenever you felt like it. That doesn't happen much, though.
Yeah i feel you for sure !!! Thats kind of the magic of books.. if leave you room to wander in your mind. sometimes there isnt an answer for everything. :) cheers
I used to be a slow slow reader. I used to think I was somewhat retarded! lol. My slow reading is made up for by thorough comprehension. However since I started drinking coffee years ago and also changed my diet around my ability to read fast has improved dramatically. So I guess I'm not that "slow" anymore :)
I really think brain fog was slowing me down for years. I eat an anti-inflammation diet now and I feel a lot sharper, better brain cognition. It's amazing how much what we put into our bodies effects us.
But thank you for sharing these tips. I'll try to put them them into practice! Have a great day Sue! -Dan
I wouldn't say i am any good at both reading or writing, so believe me you are not alone. See, i went to a Thai school my whole life so the best skill i have in the English language is my speaking skills as i would practiced with my father. I only started reading and writing more nowadays. I don't see my improvement accelerating but it is growing each day i keep on practicing. Oh !! "coffee" keeps me from not being retard in general !! it annoys me how often i have to go to the dentist and get my teeth whiten though. :) Keep your good diet up !! Looking forward to your next post
Ha ha!

Very useful tips in order to keep effective reading even in a short time, sometimes we have to read quickly for several reasons, for example when we take the reading comprehension examination, the time given is not enough if we have to read one word to another word, but with some tips above the problem can be solved. Thank you @suerisue
