That's about as depressing as Bob gets. When I was young, I wanted to have this picture tattooed on my back. I feel this crazy combination of total resignation and wild hopefulness. I think the darkness is imminent if it isn't already upon us, but my sense is that we rise up victorious on the other side. It's a matter of how quickly can we come together. We won't even have to fight the war pigs. If we all come together, they know they're beat.

Actually I think he was being kind of ironic in this song.. maybe ironic is the wrong word.. but the way he puts such hopeless words with such upbeat, happy, carefree music to me is the point of this song.

I think I remember reading in a book about him that he was actually feeling kind of down when he wrote this and that he felt like he really needed to get it out. Of course he always bounced back quickly, perhaps that's the source of the upbeat music, but he was definitely one to get his emotions out. High Tide, Low Tide is another one because the breakup of the Wailers was really hard on him, particularly feeling like he lost Peter. Love me some Bob.
