Creative Writing Challenge - Task #7 - The Objects

in #writing7 years ago

Welcome to the next round of the Creative Writing Challenge!

Task #6 has offered us an alternative ground and served as a relaxing pause between the tough challenges we've been recently enjoying. Today we'll announce the next one and we'll focus on the need to write about objects to describe our ideas in a simple and clear way.

Sounds intriguing? Keep reading :)

Let's first quickly recap the last task: you had to write an essay (or a story) based on the What
if
phrase and escalate a simple idea. We saw a few fresh entries and it has attracted new
participants willing to take an advantage of the Creative Writing Challenge opportunity.

Let's also take a moment and say “thank you” to one more sponsor. Thank you @swelker101 for your contribution of 5 SBD! The prize pool is now 60 SBD and you'll see a full list with our sponsors below.

We are still looking for sponsors. The Creative Writing Challenge might be among the best options you have if you are willing to support a Steemit initiative. All participants can confirm that this type of challenge isn't just a game to have fun with. Participants are challenged every single round and they are actually improving their writing skills. More and more people notice what we are up to and new participants are joining the format. Among our current sponsors there are writers, witnesses, therapists, entrepreneurs and software engineers. Some of them are regular challenge participants.

It's now time to reveal the next task!

Creative Writing Challenge
NUMBER SEVEN

Take a look at the objects below and write a story based on a predefined idea.

Here's a list with all predefined ideas:

  • Without excuses: write about someone who never gave up until he has achieved a certain goal.
  • Old memories: a fictional essay about someone who's sharing his most exciting story from his youth.
  • A Tree of Life: a non-fictional essay about life, compromises and self-awareness.

Some of the best writers and creative writing teachers point out the need to write about objects. They criticize the idea to use too many abstract ideas, and actually believe that writing about any objects is the key to explain an idea in an excellent way.

As usual, the deadline for this task is 48 hours or by Friday midnight.

Enjoy the challenge and let the writing begin now!

All the best,

Also, how does the contest work. As in, I only found it come challenge 6, am I eligible for any of the prizes or did you have to be there from the start? Thanks!

Happy to see you with a new story! Well done! :)

Oh this is gonna be fun!

Midnight Friday per what time zone? Sorry, I'm new here. 😁

I can't speak officially for our fearless leader, but it's pretty loose. As long as you're in the ballpark by a couple hours, you're fine.

Just stick to your time zone. By default it's Midnight EST.

Sounds good @steemfluencer. I am on Central Time, so that's easy. I worried it might be UTC or something that would throw things off for me. ;-) thanks for the response!!

No worries. You are welcome :)

This task is interesting as it could easily be multi part. I feel like I need to try the other images now too. At least give them a run and see if I can get anywhere. Here is my (maybe first) entry.

Feel free to tweak it. I've already shared with @negativer that the goal here is not only relating the objects (or an object) within the predefined idea you've chosen. It's also learning to express your idea by describing objects. It's a kind of deductive approach where a simple object becomes the cornerstone of an event that happens later.

Thank you for being such an enthusiast!

Here you go. I didn't see any instructions for using the images, so I put all six of them in consecutive sentences in the middle of the essay. Which is #3 on the defined theme list.

Thank you. I think that task #7 has an unused potential to be used sometime in the future. Putting all of the objects in consecutive sentences is one of the options and you've done it quite well (if feels strange estimating the work of a real writer who has written a million words in the past few years).

I'm just like anyone else. I'm no more of a "real writer" than anybody is that writes and works on the craft. All I'm trying to do is get better--same as everyone. That's why I thought it would be a good challenge to write the essay and somehow put all six photos into it in a way that you couldn't tell that's what I was doing, so they were an organic part of the work. I feel like I succeeded, though it's always hard for me to read my own work.

This sounds so inspiring. I really start seeing a light at the end of the tunnel for me. I only need to write regularly.

Admittedly, I am having some difficulty understanding exactly what you are asking for in this challenge. Perhaps you could be more detailed. Do you want a predefined story that includes all 6 pictures? 3 stories that include a picture? Just need a bit more info. Thanks. 🐓🐓

Hello :)
Yes, it's just one story that includes all 6 pictures or at least a number of them that you feel comfortable with.

Okay. So considering I am late to the party and ineligible for the prize, I went very stream of conscious and minimal editing. I let the words come through, read quickly through for obvious mistakes and saved it.

I kind of feel that is what this challenge thing is about. Not putting too much polish and gleam on it. Just working the creative juices. So with that, Here is my entry, "On His Own Terms"
https://steemit.com/writingchallange/@mikepm74/creative-writing-challenge-task-7-the-objects-on-his-own-terms

Well done @mikepm74! I'll include it in the lists of posts.

Looks good! So for this round, it looks like we choose one of the 6 objects, choose one of the 3 ideas, and run with it?

@negativer

Choose between one and six objects (the more, the better) and write about one of the ideas.

It would be great if you could start your story by describing an object (objects).

Example:
Just begin with: this is a unique story about [object1]/[protagonist1] and his [object2]. Everything begun in the morning of 1999 when [protagonist1] found himself in Viva Lounge Bar. That time it was the cousiest bar in Manhatan.

Exactly 100 years ago X name has invented the first [object3]. .... [make a connection later].

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the detailed explanation! So, the challenge here is really about making connections between things that aren't really related. Sounds good!

Hey @negativer - you could refer to this material - https://www.theatlantic.com/national/archive/2012/10/the-secret-to-good-writing-its-about-objects-not-ideas/263113/

The goal I'm trying to achieve here is to provide an opportunity for you to write about objects and use these objects to create a certain story (this time the topic was predetermined and you have 3 choices).

In a future assignment we would try suggesting only the topic and you would pick the object by yourself. I think that would be even easier, but now the goal was to stick to certain objects.

Good article! Lots of good info there. I see what you're saying. This exercise kind of forces us to write about physical, tangible objects, rather than kind of loose, nebulous ideas and concepts.

Absolutely! I have to admit that I should have exchanged the places of the predefined ideas and the images of the objects. It would make a bit more sense presented this way. I may do it in some of the next challenges - if I got it right, people need 6-8 weeks of exercising to learn writing about objects. So, just one assignment definitely won't be enough.

This is my understanding as well. Pic an object/image and a predefined idea.

Or write about a predefined idea using object(s).
