Hahaha. It's the archaic definition. It's the same with awful which means awe-inspiring, impressive and well, awesome. Another one is intercourse which currently means lovemaking but it also means communication.

So when you went on a date and had an awful intercourse, you'd want a second date. (I learned it from Sleepy Hollow.)
