How the story of Robin Hood is misunderstood

in #writing7 years ago (edited)

Robin Hood! The heroic outlaw in English Folklore who often is portrayed as "robbing from the rich and giving to the poor"

The first reference to the "rhymes of Robin Hood" is from c. 1377. All ready here his anti-clericalism and animosity towards the Sheriff of Nottingham are all ready clear.

This narrative is completely false. Robin Hood didn't first and foremost rob "the rich". He robbed those in POWER.

In Ayn Rand's famous novel "Atlas Shrugged" we get to know the world-famous pirate Ragnar Danneskjöld. He works to ensure that once those espousing John Galt's philosophy are restored to their rightful place in society, they will have enough capital to rebuild the world.

Ragnar Danneskjöld is in my opinion an analogy of Robin Hood. Ragnar steals money from the the government (the thieves) and hides it, and then gives it back to the rightful owner once they make it to the "secret society" that John Galt has built.

So Robin Hood is an anarchist story. A story of a freedom fighter who returns money the looters stole and gives it back to the rightful owners.

Been thinking lately about how taxes are outright and completely legal theft. What right does the government have to threathen me with imprisonment if I don't give them my hard earned money?

By no right what so ever. That's the absurd world we're living in. They tell us it would be chaos if we were free. They portray a horrible view of humans. And they force that narrative onto us by propaganda. So most people believe we are evil creatures destroying the world, UNLESS uncle state keeps us in chains. The ultimate slave.

question for you- if 100% tax is theft at what percentage would it become not theft?

When it is given 100% voluntarily and at the givers desired rate with zero repercussions for paying or not paying. A donation if you will.

yer the government would not allow that. As with everyone you need to look out for number 1 first

That is the whole point. We believe the government has no actual right to allow or disallow anything. Our rights come from God. Government power is completely out of control. They work for us. Not the other way around. Their crap smells just as bad as ours.

So the question remains:
Are you really stealing if you are taking back something and giving it to the proper owner?

That sounds like returning!

Good point

Thank you buddy :)

Governments are mandated by the electorate to manage the revenue. They are supposed to use this fiscal revenue to see to the socioeconomic needs of the country. Instead many of them use part of this fiscal revenue to finance their lavish lifestyles. But what is really hurting the middle classes is the tax burden that they have to carry because multinationals are structuring their taxation in such a way that they pay very little taxes. In other words, multinationals are not paying their fair share of taxes, thus placing the tax burden on the middle classes....

There are no fair share of tax. Taxation is theft, so how can it be fair? If i only steal half the money in your wallet and tell you im gonna write a really clever book that i promise is going to be of good value to you - is that fair?

Taxes are needed for the running of a country - for building schools, hospitals, universities, social support, etc. Taxes are one of the major sources of income for governments. Corporations need to pay taxes in the jurisdiction that they operate in as they use the facilities, the infrastructure, etc. Also if they shrug their responsibility of paying taxes, they shift the burden of tax payment to the middle classes. These are the very people that contribute to the success of the corporation. So that's why there was a backlash wrt Starbucks in the UK

So you think that the popularly accepted Robin Hood story is wrong because you've read Ayn Rand? Since Ayn Rand was writing more than five centuries after Robin Hood, it doesn't seem like it's very relevant. Maybe the actual original versions of the Robin Hood story and the political context of 14th-century England are more important to understanding the story than 20th-century capitalist mythology.

Not really no. He took back taxes from those who stole it. He did not steal it from rich peole who had earned it (if those even existed). He was not an immoral scum.
