Your First Slow Dance and How You Secretly Fell for a Friend

in #writing7 years ago (edited)

You unintentionally fell for the moment.
Almost for the person.
Hard for the idea of you being with the person.

Made a reference out of my favorite movie, A Walk to Remember, for this photo because the atmosphere feels just like Jamie and Landon's first date where they were the only youngsters amidst a sea of old people in a quaint diner under the stars.

You said it was a Give Me Love, an Ang Huling El Bimbo and a With a Smile moment. You have always had a knack for describing moments with songs.

You found yourself lost in a sea of people, some of them your closest friends, some just your friends, and some merely acquaintances. Upbeat songs suddenly shifted to slow dance music and bodies started grabbing others and synchronically swayed to the melody. It was a fun night, you decided for the last soiree of your last year in college. That night you looked pretty badass with a rockstar half updo giving the illusion of shaved side undercuts and the little black pleated dress you borrowed. You changed your 5 inch heels to your classic chucks too. You almost looked like the oriental version of Pink. And then you saw him, standing as lost as you, looking almost okay, almost happy, almost contented. But you have been good friends long enough to know that he wasn’t even feeling close to almost.

So you grabbed his hand and said ‘Let’s dance’. You danced to the music of Ed Sheeran. He guided you through the song which had you surprised because you thought he wasn’t one to know how to slow dance. Not that you know how to slow dance yourself. He told you he’s been to a few dances in high school. You told him you didn’t know how to dance between chuckles and glancing at your feet so you won’t step on his. Then just as things were starting to feel awkward, he started to sing along Give Me Love. You felt him pull you closer as he shifted your hand to his shoulder so he has both his hands on the small of your back. You hid your face on the side of his head so he couldn’t see the blood creeping through the arteries on your cheeks at the almost sweet gesture. You didn’t even think you’d both last one song then switch partners. But you did.

You unintentionally fell for the moment. Almost for the person. Hard for the idea of you being with the person.

As the song ended, you both broke hold as sudden as waking up from a dream. For a second, you couldn’t look him in the face, but you held your head up and gave him the best curve you could form with your lips. After all, it was supposed to be a dance between two lost friends. End

Recycling old drafts.
