THE LOST CITY OF Z

I have been pretty busy lately that I didn't watch any movies. But I'm back fully with an inspiring true life story of a British soldier and explorer of Southern America, Percy Fawcett . For those that don't know his story, Percy, his son Jack together with Jack's friend Raleigh Rimmell embarked and disappeared on an expedition to find a lost city, Z which Fawcett and others believed exists in the jungles of Brazil. Attempts have been made to solve the mystery of there disappearance but to no avail. As latest as 2005, The New Yorker Magazine published an article by a journalist, David Grann. He retraced Fawcett's steps and found proof of the city. He further published a book in 2009, called The lost city of Z. Which is where director Gray adapted his movie from.

Percy Fawcett (Charlie Hunnam) is as ambitious as his moustache and hat which is why he accepted to lead a survey party to survey the boundary between Bolivia and Brazil as they are nearly at war over it. He wanted to do this to restore his family name. He and his team go and despite warnings of the dangers in the jungle and they return successful. The Amazonian scout Tadjui, tells Fawcett stories about a city in the jungle covered in gold and full of people. Fawcett didn't believe him but discovers highly advanced broken pottery and some small stone statues in the jungle that convince him of the veracity of Tadjui's story.

On his return, his wife, Nina discovers a text in the Library which tells of a city deep in the Amazonian jungle. After receiving public ridicule, the RGS still backed the expedition to find the city.. He failed and returned due to unforeseen circumstances.

In 1923, his oldest son, Jack filled with sane ambition as his father convinced his father to go once again and find the lost city. The US papers finances the expedition, and Britain joins to restore their pride. Fawcett and his son set out once again to find this city.

This is the best performance I have seen from Charles Hunnam, he flawlessly exhibits the competitive and ambitious nature of Fawcett, his wits and vigor, never giving up even if it means his death.
Another wonderful performance is Sienna Miller as Nina, she's a strong independent woman. She supported her husband and even offered to join him in his expeditions.
The movie is a lot to take in but it exhausts the facts needed to be known within the 2hr running time under the direction of James Gray. The visuals of the untapped forest and the settings and costume design is beautiful. The movie feels long but it leaves an after effect that will make you want embark visit the jungle with Fawcett.
The lost city of Z shows us the inner craving of man for deeper knowledge and mystery
