SPLIT

After reading one of Danielle Steel's novel (i can't remember the name, I think I read it when I was between 10-12 years old) about dissociative identity disorder also known as Personality Disorder, I often wondered if such conditions exist.

For those that don't know, Personality Disorder is simply when an individual have 2 or more different personalities. For example Adam and Steve are two different people, now imagine both men living in one person, called Daniel. Now Daniel has 3 different personalities, him, Adam and Steve. And these 3 take turns to exhibit themselves using Daniel's body.

I wonder if this is real, so far I have only seen them in movies or in novels. Movies such as Split

Three teenage girls Casey, Marcia and Claire got abducted by Kevin Wendell Crumb, a young man with a neatly shaved hair and 23 different personalities. He locked the girls up in a room covered with walls and hallways, and the girls are forced to watch each of his personalities come in to play.

Kevin moved from being a woman called Patricia, to a pedophile called Dennis, to a little boy Hedwig, to Jade, to Barry. It was revealed that Barry was the most consistent one and he decides the personality that comes to light. The only person that truly understands Kevin is his Dr. Fletcher, an elderly woman that helps people with such cases. It didn't take Long for Casey to realize what was amiss with Kevin, having been molested by her uncle as a kid and gone through psychological meltdown, she befriends Hedwig to lure him to release them but to no avail. It was revealed that a 24th personality called 'the beast' is yet to be unleashed and the girls were abducted by Dennis as a sacrifice to him. Whether the beast is real or not? The girls won't die without fighting..

People might not find Split interesting, I do find it interesting as a movie but I find it scary a reality. Director Shyamalan started out the movie as a case study of mental disorder, like he wanted the world to believe that such things exist and embrace it, but at the end he put fears in our hearts by making us believe that the people with these disorders can be violent. Truth be told if I meet someone with that problem, it will take the Grace of God for me not to pull my shoes and run!. It wouldn't have been so if it were directed as a horror movie from the beginning. Secondly, we see Casey's troubled childhood, but no strong relationship or connection was made between her and Kevin. The performances are outstanding, McAvoy shines in displaying the different personalities. Split is a standalone sequel of Shyamalan's 2000 UNBREAKABLE and the last scene with the appearance of Bruce Willis as David Dunn suggests a come back. I can't wait to see how the director will combine these characters together.
