I slowly opened my bedroom door, cautiously peering down the hallway. The crash had come from downstairs; I briefly wondered if I had left a window open, and some courageous critter had crawled its way in. Stepping softly, my unease growing with each moment, I rounded the corner into my kitchen... But it was empty, my knife set lying on the ground.
