Something that is mobile, has a low beginning learning curve, that is very accessible everywhere you go, and that is very affordable.
Have you considered the ukulele? It is smaller and easier to play than a guitar (4 strings vs. 6 strings). I got a Mahalo ukulele for under $30 USD and a ukulele pitch pipe for tuning for under $15 USD.
Haha, yeah, that is a good option/alternative! These past recent years, I did think about that, but didn't do it. Not sure what happened, haha, but my plate's a little full right now! :P
