The fellow raised his head slowly as he moved closer to her. Esther realized he was young once she got a good look at the dark face but discovered his eyes were shut. Why? She thought for a second. Paralysis gripped her as they flicked open suddenly....
The Crawlers! Her mind flew back to the stories her father had told her in her younger years. But he had assured her back then that they weren't real. The Crawlers that took any Walker they found on the streets at midnight as their prisoner. They hated that they only had till twilight to return to their underground homes, hence, they were merciless. Hadn't she, Wale and Jimmy gone to search for holes in the bushes one afternoon after they'd spent their morning at the library filling their head with tales from different books. Only to return home disappointed. That night as she woke to drink water, the glass cup slipped from her hand when she heard a scream outside. She tried to sneak out but found their front door impossible to open even after unlocking the padlock.
His breath caressed her face, making her shiver. His shiny eyes never flinched for a second; he was so close to her that she feared his penetrating eyes would bore a hole into her soul where she'll be stuck for eternity. Esther quickly closed her eyes and retreated slowly. She let out a scream when one of her foot took longer than usual to reach the ground.
Kamal caught her just in time, and balanced her against his arms. She was beautiful, too beautiful for his liking. Even though she wasn't of his calibre, he couldn't help not be awed. She was a Walker, and Walkers moved by the day whilst he, a Crawler, languished in Kosco everyday, bidding nightfall with his people.
"What kept you out this late?" Kamal asked, as he studied her questioning gaze. He hated that he couldn't take his eyes off her. Her body was trembling, which meant she was visibly terrified of him.
"It's not midnight yet. And I'm not scared of you", Esther mumbled weakly as he swept her feet off the ground. He was taking her to wherever he lived she thought. Maybe to do bad stuffs to her. Bad stuffs.
"Check your watch; it is midnight in Kosco." He replied. Esther's eye becane alert as she noticed the tiny time telling arms of her wristwatch move rapidly inside the device: It stopped at 12:10...a. m!
As Kamal steadied her, he detected a familiar scent in the air and quickly stepped back into the shadows. Intruders. He scanned the buildings, alleys around for escape routes just in case. He checked the window of the shop behind him and saw the curtain returning back to its original position just at the nick of time.
"Open it, She's one of you, dammit!" Kamal growled as he saw three figures materialised several metres ahead. "The lady needs help!"
The curtained switched sideways, a hand materialised instantly and pushed the window open. Kamal quickly transferred the girl's unconscious body through the window and closed it back hurriedly. Then he stepped into the streets, to greet his friends.
