Chapter 3: Welcome to Dolbin

As the helicopter rose above the school, no one spoke. Jake looked out the window, wondering if he would ever see his friends again. He had no idea where he was going or what was going to happen to him.

“Here we go!” the pilot announced over the intercom. Jake slammed up against his seat as the helicopter picked up speed. A lot of speed. He squeezed the armrests. The helicopter flew into a cloud and he could no longer see the ground.  His mother reached over and grabbed his hand to relax him.

“It will be okay, sweetie,” she said calmly. “We’re going to a safe place.”

“Where is this safe place?” Jake asked.

Everyone else in the helicopter looked around, unsure of what to say. Jake’s parents exchanged glances.

“We will be there soon enough,” his dad said. “There’s no point in explaining it until you see it.”

Jake sat back into his seat. He was frozen in fear. Seven minutes passed in silence.

“Approaching destination,” said the pilot. “If he looks out the front, he’ll see it.”

Jake’s parents smiled and pointed to the front of the helicopter. Jake leaned forward. The clouds begin to part, revealing the top of a mountain. Then Jake realized that he was no longer looking at just the top of a mountain, but a building.

It was silver with five columns in the front. A long wing stretched out to the left and right. People walked between the buildings. A parking lot was filled with vehicles of all different shapes and sizes. Silver, black, blue, yellow vehicles were spread out underneath the helicopter. Some seemed to have wings; others had blades like a helicopter. A few reminded Jake of sports cars.  One looked like a tank.

The helicopter began to descend. Jake spotted a landing platform. The helicopter dipped silently.

One of the suitmen opened the door. Jake’s mom and dad got out first and then Jake slowly stepped onto the ground.

The other suitman exited the helicopter and stood behind Jake.

Jake’s dad looked around. “Well, son, this is where I went to elementary school. It looks like a few things have changed. That building over there wasn’t here,” he said, pointing to Jake’s left.

Jake looked dumbfounded. “Umm,” he paused, “where are we?”

Jake’s father shook his head, smiled and opened his arms.

“Son,” he said, “welcome to the Dolbin School for the Extraordinary.”
