There's a lot we can do, even with the little people, to spread the word. Every time someone adds "@markrmorrisjr" in a post or comment, my name gets spread. The whales will find you, if you're doing good work. The big projects will support you, if they see you're getting results. I ran a 6 figure social media marketing firm for three years.
