Excellent writing! Interested to see where the horror jumps in.

I did notice this:

Wherever a structural component had been stamped out of sheet metal, there were decorative inset designs. Similar to a bas relief.

The last sentence is a fragment, meant to be attached to provide more description to "inset designs" I would think.
