Pa sando un poco a la historia se puede desir que fue uno de los principales caminos que utilizaron los conquistadores para explorar un territorio brusco en esa epoca, tambien podemos desir que este rio es uno de los principales afluentes de colombia, aunque no es navegable en la totalidad , mide 1540 km, y solo 990 son navegables.
