Book Formatting Basics

in #writing10 years ago

Formatting can be one of the more challenging and tedious parts with book publishing; It's important that you do it right. So reading your book is easy and fun!

The first time you do it, You'll probably want to rip your hair out.
If you use Microsoft word, it's hard to use charts, If they are too large they'll look all funny, So it's best to format your document for the Kindle size in the beginning. I don't do that. You'd think I'd learn by now, With the amount of corrections I've had to make. So learn from my stupidity. Do it right!

Keep in mind....

  • .Mobi = Amazon Kindle
  • .epub = Everyone else
    I like to use.PDF,

Your Headings

These build the foundation for your Table Of Contents. If you are using Microsoft Word, Then you can use your headings to rapidly make a Table Of Contents once you are done writing your book, These also make the book easier to read, If you are writing non-fiction. It's easier for your reader to skip around and read the stuff most appealing to them. I really don't like those books that aren't nicely formatted. Especially the non-fiction ones. I don't want to waste my time reading the whole book if I only need to learn certain aspects of it, So I'll want to skip directly to those chapters and then quickly skim the rest to see if there is any new information.

Table Of Contents

Like I said above you can use your headings to generate one quickly when you are finished writing your book.
You can also use a program called Scrivener, This is similar to Microsoft Word, You can write your whole book on it. Although it takes a learning curve. I played with it for a while but ended up going to Microsoft Word because I didn't want to invest all the time to learn Scrivener.

Formatting your book can be somewhat easy. I like to use photos for charts and info stuff. While I stick mostly to plain text, Bolding, and headers for the rest of my text, As long as you don't want to do anything too complex with your writing, Formatting can be pretty easy once you get the hang of it. Just mess around with it and see what works for you.

Thank you so much XD

Is there a better editor to write Steem posts in? Its not exactly books, but I've had trouble with the provided editor.

Try StackEdit - https://stackedit.io/

Dude you are awesome, thanks!

I personally use Grammarly.

Wow never heard of that! THanks @johnchang

I have markdown memorized. Or at least most of it.

Thanks @johnchang and @kaylinart ~ I wish there was a preview at Steemit, so that you could see your images and know where to edit the post before posting. Will look at both Stackedit and Grammarly. And thanks @therajmahal for asking.
