Some Balanced Thoughts On The Thanksgiving Holiday

in #writing8 years ago (edited)

I am generally not a holiday person, especially when those holidays are formed around historical ideas and events that I oppose, such as the colonial conquest of America, for example. However, I can appreciate certain aspects of different holidays, and when it comes to Thanksgiving, I've found the tradition of identifying things to be thankful for as something positive that we should try to do on a regular basis.

Over the past three years, throughout my battle with cancer, I have really been learning to focus on the things I appreciate in my life, instead of the things I'm missing or how I was done wrong. In the past, I've faced depression because I have been consumed with being broke, having a shitty childhood, my experience with cops, my bizarre feeding disorder (ARFID), or my entrepreneurial mistakes, but after realizing how short and fragile life really is I have been making a conscious effort every day to be thankful for the things I appreciate.

I have a lot of people who care about me, I have an amazing wife, I love my job and where I live. I don't need to be rich or super successful to be happy and I don't need to erase or forget about my past, I just need to be grateful that it's over and that I've learned from the experiences. Sure, there is a lot of negative stuff going on in the world that upsets me, and I will continue to speak out about that through my writing and activism, but im not going to allow those things to ruin my day any more.

I used to think that these depressive thoughts where I was down on myself and my situation was just an uncontrollable aspect of my personality, but it actually can be managed and controlled by developing a stronger inner voice that is positive and confident...It sucks it took getting cancer for me to realize this, but at least it happened eventually.
