MR. ROBOT & SHADES OF GREY - A [drunken] discussion on our reality.

Opening quote of Shades of Grey:

There is no light or color as a fact in external nature. There is merely motion of material… When the light enters your eyes and falls on the retina, there is motion of material. Then your nerves are affected and your brain is affected, and again this is merely motion of material… The mind in apprehending experiences sensations which, properly speaking, are qualities of the mind alone. - Alfred North Whitehead

Disclaimer: I woke up this morning and opened my computer, and found this rant. I was drinking Wild Turkey and binge watching MR. ROBOT... apparently. I love the novel Shades of Grey, and found some comparative insight between both.

Are there any parallels between MR ROBOT and SHADES or am I connecting everything in a personal universe of thought?

And if so, and I admit I’m fueled by whiskey and Adderall… does it mean anything to even myself?

In the season finale of MR ROBOT, we finally get to see Elliot act like Mr Robot.

He’s doing his impersonation of Cristian Slater for the first time, and it’s really good. Speech pattern, subtle intention, all great. Next obvious thought - he clearly deserves the Emmy he just won, and will again next year. Even more so.

Holy fuck,

Also, how close would you say you were to putting sticky notes all over the house you’re staying in that only describe the absurdity of something like that existing… as if you were going to show your concession to the "simple think" mind of the people with the small pupils in the novel SHADES OF GREY, but do it in an abstract blatant way like labeling furniture hahaha would the first (edit: clearest) notes have said “is this bronze?”

Is that a patronizing reference to something in the book?

What’s the meaning of the FACT that before pondering ANY of these questions, a simple internal question of “what time is it” led my body to exploit a “relatively” recently learned fact that focus and amount of light are relative, in a way that can be exploited not JUST with the harmful contraction of the muscles around the eye, BUT with the pinhole size hole one can create with your hand (BTdubs the time was 2:33am.)

The next relevant thought was about the people in SHADES, their small fucking pupils and the “Ovaltine-previous” that lacked clarity and focus but had the benefit of night sight and all of the colors.

State it like the book:

“In trade for night vision, the previous lacked clarity.” Ovaltine = sight correction.

Smaller pupils, sharper image… but to the extreme, an actually grey world…
or at the very least a color singularity, or a “monochrome” outlook.

And is this a discussion of the show, or a book?

Also, HOLY FUCK. The performance I’m watching in this episode is NOT the performance that WON him the Emmy. That will be obvious to tomorrow’s “morning me,” but still… seriously. How far has this awkward speech impediment using weirdo come? And did Tom Hanks / Gary Goetzman see it even back then during the casting of THE PACIFIC?

Risk-game-board.jpg

If a whole society can be fictionally realized by accepting that our world saw the world around them through the boundaries of the world as shown on the game board for the game, RISK… then what heinously different world exists on a clearly higher sphere because we live in a world where FUCK is an anagram we not only don’t know the origin of, but each and every one of us accept as relative to it’s current meaning.

If the Chomogentsia accept RISK as an important anagram relevant to their destiny… what does that say about our acceptance that the word FUCK means, “fornication under the (insert the bullshit we were spit, blah blah blah)?

And is this a fine instance of one glimpsing the collective knowledge, finding it purposefully ignorant, and heartbroken by the lost information. If the Chromotocracy lost the meaning of “hypothetical” or “titanic” and thus the nature of humanity itself.. . Then what have we lost in our own versions of “leapbacks”? For example, who built the pyramids or what is the explanation of stonehenge?

The “falling man” video from 9-11 is just as curious. Just as damning. Just as unsolvable.

We don’t chase connection to central color like the Chromotocracy, but what’s the horrible equivalent?

Final thoughts; the dark army is behind everything in MR ROBOT. And Eddie describes the “dark” as a whole in our existence. Where only animals and The Previous can move about… and the stars in their spheres.

WHAT HAVE WE FORGOTTEN?

Mr. Robot is an unreliable narrator, who questions not only what he sees, but the very act of perception itself.

Sort:

You drunk bastard, hahahaha.

Huge fan of SHADES OF GREY and MR. ROBOT. What a hilarious rant. Hahaha

Haha, thanks! Yeah, SHADES is so good. So unfortunate about the title. Such good sci-fi. So many more people might have read it if not for that crappy S&M-for-teens book.

I KNOW! Every time I tell anyone about the book, they initially judge the shit out of me! I'm surprised more people don't know Jasper Fforde.

His THURSDAY NEXT series is incredible. She's such an awesome detective.

Mr Robot is a really great show!

It blows me away. That the writing could be so good, and the cinematography... and THEN to get such great performances. Killer

Oh beans, lol! You're much more articulate during the day. What is Shades of Grey? I'm not familiar but it sounds interesting.

IT'S SO GOOD!!! It's about this quasi-post-apocalyptic society, where people are stuck in castes based on the one color they can see, and by how much. Beautifully written. Hauntingly fucked up.

I'll check it out!

Rami Malek is so incredible. And you're right, he gives such an incredible performance in this. That Slater impersonation is hysterical.

He's so hot too, in that dark and stormy way.

You are insane.
