Write Drunk, Edit Sober

in #writing7 years ago (edited)

This post was inspired by @stellabelle's vlog which she said a lot of meaningful things after a bottle of drink.

I have mentioned it here a couple of times that I am not a writer, I am a person who likes sharing thoughts and ideas to people. I have never blogged before joining steemit. But I have a thing for stories, which before joining here I used to write on pieces if paper which sometimes get lost. I have to start all over again to rewrite them. But with steemit they are saved in blockchain to be accessed any given day I want.

In my cause of blogging I have encountered a lot of people, most are those I tried to recruit for steemit. Others are newbies on the platform. They always complain the same thing, "How can I survive steemit. Everyone here is a writer. I am not a writer." I always have the same reply, "Neither am I." The next question is something some of you reading could have guessed. It is this, "How can you say you are not a writer, I just visited your blog and saw a lot of articles?"

I always tell them that their power of observation had not failed them. Yes. I wrote all the articles. There was no special training. I did most of the article following Ernest Hemingway's advise.

Write drunk, edit sober.

While not saying you should go out on a binge before writing, what I am trying to pass across is this, do not overprepare before writing an article.

There are time an idea would come to you and you really need to put it down. But then the correct words to put them tends to be am issue. I usually type it as is on my Google Keep app. My favorite mobile app (I write mostly on mobile) is Google Keep. It is an amazing app. You can save and access with another device as long as you logged in with same gmail.

You can even do voice dictation and everything is securely kept for you. It is a handy tool which I used to jot down my "drunk" ideas. I write it down without bothering to check if it makes sense or whether the grammar is ok. All I do is write it down.

Then when I want to post that is when I do the edit (some I just post the "drunken" version). Those drunken versions most times are the best creative ideas you may ever come up with.

You may wait for that perfect moment or that perfect creative idea to pop into your head. Newsflash: That is usually once in a blue moon.

So, I encourage you to always put down those "crazy" ideas down as it pumps and dances around your mind waiting for an escape vent. So, do the most expected thing; let the creative juice flow in that cup and share it for posterity.

So why wait untill you are sober? Write drunk now!

Sort:

somebody @cleverbot told me to just write and keep writing

I never made that statement. Telling the truth does not mean that you are always factual.

My craziest ideas come when I am in bed, trying to fall asleep.

Thanks, I enjoyed your article.

Type it fastly down before going to sleep :)

"I wish I can write good" usually don't write anything. It doesn't need to be perfect. Write it. Leave it. Come back and see if it needs to be edited. If not, publish it.
Keep running..

I agree with your statement. Better to start off somewhere than wait for a perfect moment that may be hard to come by.

Hmm... this is on point. You know I do similar thing on my phone's note but I don't know if it can dictate or something but still it has always been my jotter sort of.

Once am going out, talking people see me subddenly serious typing and after a while put the phone aside they wonder if this lady is alright... I think that is what they feel though.

I jot on books alot too and it surprises me how my jotter from school I still have them. I love jotters because that is what I use to read during exams.

Jotting things down also works as an aid to memory. Some ideas may escape if not written down. So it's great you do write them down as they come. Thank you.

True!

I have a lot of ideas I have written down which I am yet to share or write about. They just pop in my head and I quickly jot them down on my phone. Maybe will have to transfer them to paper in case anything happens to my phone.

Love the ending of your post o, very artistic and juicy.

You always have a gadget problem :)
Better get it on somewhere safe, eg. a Dropbox or any of these cloud hosting company. If you use Google Keep it is synced to your email, even if phone is lost just download it again, log in, and everything would be synced. No lost data or material. Thanks for the kind compliment.

Yes, I love this quote. My writing partner and I in Hollywood have always adhered to this statement. Haha. We also have to every once in a while take a break from the drinking. :)

I'm glad Hemingway's advise was able to be of help :)
