Mungkin banyak diantara kita yang pernah mengalami 'tindihan' disaat sedang tidur, dimana kita tidak dapat bergerak, mengeluarkan suara dan sulit atau tidak dapat bernapas. Orang-orang banyak yang mengait-ngaitkan peristiwa ini dengan hal-hal yang berbau mistis, seperti ditindih oleh setan atau mahluk gaib lainnya. Namun saat ini peristiwa 'tindihan' yang terjadi disaat kita tidur dan menyebabkan kita tidak dapat bergerak serta sulit bernapas itu ternyata telah dapat dijelaskan secara ilmiah oleh para ilmuan. Mereka mengatakan kondisi seperti ini dengan nama paralysis, atau kelumpuhan disaat tidur.
Maybe many of us have experienced 'squeeze' when we are sleeping, where we can't move, make a sound and are difficult or unable to breathe. Many people associate this event with things that are mystical, like being crushed by demons or other supernatural beings. But now the 'squeeze' event that occurs when we sleep and causes us to be unable to move and have difficulty breathing can turn out to be scientifically explained by scientists. They say conditions like this are called paralysis, or paralysis while sleeping.

Tindihan itu biasanya terjadi disaat kita yang sedang tidur merasakan diri kita sudah sadar dan matapun sudah terbuka. Lalu, dalam hitungan detik atau menit tubuh kita tidak dapat digerakkan serta tidak dapat bicara. Bahkan terkadang juga merasa sesak serta sulit bernapas dan tersedak. Kelumpuhan ini dapat terjadi satu atau dua kali dalam periode yang tertentu, namun ada juga yang mengalaminya beberapa kali dalam satu periode tidur nya. Dan paralysis ini kerap terjadi pada pria atau wanita yang kebanyakannya berusia antara lima belas sampai dua puluh tahun. Lalu, apakah yang terjadi sebenarnya saat kita mengalami kelumpuhan tidur ?
Squeeze usually happens when we are sleeping feeling that we are aware and the eyes are open. Then, in a matter of seconds or minutes our body cannot be moved and cannot speak. Even sometimes also feel tight and have difficulty breathing and choking. This paralysis can occur once or twice in a certain period, but there are also those who experience it several times in one sleep period. And this paralysis often occurs in men or women who are mostly between the ages of fifteen and twenty years. Then, what really happens when we experience sleep paralysis?

Ada empat tahapan yang kita lalui disaat sedang tidur, yaitu tahap setengah sadar, tahap tidur lebih dalam, tidur paling dalam serta tahap Rapid Eye Movment (REM) atau dapat diartikan gerakan mata yang cepat. Pada tahapan awal sampai dengan tidur paling dalam, biasanya kita memakan waktu sampai 75 persen dari keseluruhan waktu tidur kita. Dan disaat tubuh kita kurang fit karena terlalu lelah dan kurang tidur, maka keempat tahapan ini akan kita lalui dengan tidak sempurna. Yang intinya kita dapat saja dari tahapan ringan langsung melompat ke tahapan REM. Saat tiba pada tahap REM, tubuh kita yang sebelumnya sangat rileks akan mulai berubah, mata akan bergerak dengan cepat dan biasanya mulai muncul mimpi. Akibatnya saat otak kita sudah terjaga, dan tubuh kita belum bangun dengan sempurna karena siklus REM belum selesai. Sehingga kita belum dapat bergerak dan berbicara.

Banyak orang-orang yang menyarankan, disaat kita mengalami tindihan cobalah berusaha untuk menggerakkan ujung jari kaki maupun tangan secara perlahan sedikit demi sedikit dan mengatur napas secara perlahan. Dan 'tindihan' ini janganlah terlalu dipusingkan, sebab kelumpuhan tidur merupakan sesuatu normal dalam menikmati tidur kita. Namun, bila hal itu telah membuat kita cemas secara berlebihan, maka berkonsultasilah pada dokter. Pastinya dokter akan memberi solusi agar tidur kita akan lebih nyaman.
