Beberapa gunung berapi akhir-akhir ini mulai memperlihatkan aktivitasnya, hal ini tentu mengisyaratkan kepada kita sebagai manusia untuk mawas diri, bersiap dan harus terus belajar untuk lebih memahami alam disekitar kita. Sebagai contoh kecil, gunung Soputan di Minahasa yang membuat ilmuan kebingungan karena aktivitasnya yang ganjil dan tidak henti-hentinya. Juga anak krakatau yang mulai aktif dan telah menyemburkan lava pijar dan abu ratusan meter tingginya. Semua aktivitas-aktivitas itu janganlah pernah kita remehkan.

Sejarah telah mencatat, bagaimana dampak yang dirasakan hampir diseluruh dunia saat Krakatau meletus pada Agustus 1883. Krakatau meletus tak karu-karuan dengan suara letusan paling besar yang pernah terdengar dan menjadi letusan paling hebat dalam sejarah. Enam kilometer kubik campuran lahar beserta debu dilontarkan ke angkasa yang belakangan awan debunya menyebar dan menyelimuti seluruh dunia serta mewarnai matahari terbenam di pelosok dunia selama tiga tahun setelah letusan. Abu yang beterbangan saat itu terlihat jelas di langit New York Amerika serta suara dentuman yang mencapai pulau Rodriquez di samudra Pasifik yang jauhnya 5000 kilometer dari gunung itu berada. Dampak yang luar biasa dan tidak terpikirkan serta tidak terbayangkan.

Empat puluh tahun setelah induknya meletus, lahirlah anak Krakatau. Ia terlahir memang setelah orang tuanya lenyap, namun ia terlahir bukankah sebagai anak haram, bahkan kelahirannya juga tercatat dengan resmi pada tahun 1927. Kemunculan gunung api yang dikenal sebagai anak Krakatau itu tentunya membuat banyak orang merasa was-was, akankah dia se-ganas serta se-dahsyat leluhurnya ?. Faktanya kini ia terus tumbuh dan bertambah tinggi setiap tahunnya, dimana saat ini ketinggiannya hampir mencapai 250 meter di atas permukaan laut. Sementara itu induknya saat meletus diperkirakan memiliki ketinggian 813 meter dari permukaan laut.

Kita mungkin saja merasa cemas dan takut dengan sejarah kelam meletusnya gunung Krakatau. Betapa puluhan ribu jiwa menjadi korban dari amukan gunung yang sangat luar biasa itu. Dan betapa kita tidak dapat mencegah sebuah gunung agar tidak meletus. Sedangkan menurut seorang ahli geologi, bahwa realita geologi, seismik dan tektonik di pulau Jawa dan Sumatera yang unik dan aneh memastikan apa yang dulunya pernah terjadi pada suatu saat akan terjadi kembali. Namun tidak ada yang tahu pasti kapan itu terjadi, tetapi yang jelas ia akan mengikuti jejak induknya.

Beberapa pakar lainnya juga menyebutkan belum ada teori yang masuk akal jika anak Krakatau akan meletus dengan skala besar dalam waktu dekat ini. Tetapi mereka juga mengatakan bila ia meletus dengan skala besar akan sangat berbahaya. Namun andaikata ia meletus setelah ketinggiannya melebihi induknya, jelas sekali bahwa angka korban yang ditimbulkan juga melebihi letusan induknya.
Namun kapan ia meletus dan mempercepat kiamat ?, kita tidak ada yang tahu. Kita hanya dapat menganalisa dan memprediks kekuatan alam, tetapi Tuhan Yang Maha Kuasa lah Yang Maha Tahu.
