ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE

Environment is the surrounding or conditions in which a person lives. This includes home, place of work, schools, communities and parks. These are places you spend your life time and they play a big role in your overall health, happiness and wellbeing.

Environment justice is fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people regardless of race, color, national origin or income with respect to development, implementations and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations and policies.

Environmental justice grew out of the realization that polluting industries and facilities such as landfills and power plants are often located near low income communities, disproportionately burdened by pollution and experience unequal access to environmental resources led to efforts to identify and correct these discrepancies.

Lower income or minority communities lack access to health and affordable food, good sources of health or health care centres and public transport which may be available to the urban areas, policies must be monitored to avoid cuts in services and fare hikes that makes it difficult for community resident to pursue employment or an adequate living standard.

Air and water are major environmental justice issues. Because many lower-income or minority communities are located near industrial plants or waste disposal sites and air and water quality can suffer if not properly monitored the health of the community is at risk.

Lower-income communities may contain older and unsafe homes. Older homes are more likely to have lead-based paint that can chip and find its way into the dust and soil surrounding our home, leading to illness. The houses may also be prone to structural problem, mold or other hazards that put residents at higher risk of health problems. Oil spilled pollutes farmland and water, kills plants and animals that are beneficial to man.

To achieve environmental Justice, everyone should enjoy degree of protection from environmental and health hazards and equal access to the decision making process to have a healthy environment in which to live, learn and work.
