The Noumenal, Anti-Cosmic and Grossness of Nature

Coffee at 19:30 pm, my face feels kind of masked and suffocated. What is supposed to be a relaxing breeze, ideal for my writing, is working to get me to sleep, like the gentle touch of what might as well be the angel of death or some part of the judeo-christo article of myth. Nature isn’t as pleasant as we all imagine it to be.

It is that one peculiar part of a totality of views that has gotten me into trouble. The many picnics put together by women courtiers that have seen ruin at the breath of anti-cosmic airs are too shameful to recount. The expensive wines, loaves of Tuscan bread, the cheeses and some assortment of berries and fruit that have had to be returned to a basket. The chance at something scenically idyllic put to an end by “I find nature wondrous but absolutely horrifying and disgusting”. What woman would tolerate that level of cynicism?

Is it not one of the idealization of our hyper-modern culture to practice a kind of synthesis between the pantheistic and deism. Tugging back and forward between an indifferent and the idea of a pervasive spirit of the divine, present in all and emanating in some vision of god or the gods. It’s not a bad idea if it’s held personally. How long until it looks to align man’s lives according to its whim when organized. I’m not reaching here, the cults of the twentieth century will speak for me.

The problem of human edification aside, nature is constantly trying to do away with us. To snuff us out, to still the breathe of not just ours but has done so to many other species on our beloved blue ball. And these aren’t outliers, mind you, but it seems to be the business of the whole of creation. It is the other side of the coin of existence that we choose to play make belief about and pretend to be a defect of sorts, the devil that peeks his head every now and again to make some new mischief for the sons and daughter of men. The recent two bottlenecks that preceded us and so the rise of our specie and that which assisted the annihilation of the Neanderthal, brought to an end buy the natural design of a migrating peoples. Some beauty that is.

As for the repugnance, I use the example of the child. Grow, learning, taking this step and that one toward the delusion of adulthood. Before then a five or six year old might find out something, say, about the bird and the bees. The reaction is that of being curiously disgusted, of which the latter verb is truer than its cousin. I happen to think child are wise for this opinion. What else can you say about to adults caught in the thrall supposedly godly or transcend powers?

I sense I haven't driven the point home quite yet so let's deface another cultural item and perception. The rose and the flowers of the field, often presented to the object of fascination, the Beloved, the Cause of Longing, the Muse and Paramour. Cut from the source of sustenance, stem mutilated to present an exposed solicitation of sex to bees and butterflies. The flower and rose is exactly that.

Add to that the public prohibition on the act of sex. I don’t think that it’s there for virtuous reasons, I’d dare say it could be from a shyness and the instinctual tendency to belt away the such subjects and bury the grossness of it. The idealization of nature is not an appraisal of those noumenal qualities but a denial of them.

If there is any beauty to be the thing, it is that it will not let us be as we think we are. It won’t have it.
