The Brief Writers Primer From Experience.jpg

It does follow that if one is to say something about how people should conduct themselves ethically as far as what and how they write, they should say something about how to pick a subject and how to go about writing about whatever it is they choose. We’ve gone over what your ethics ought to be, the fallout from an absence of some code and how to keep it sexy or witty as you move between or with the two principles in mind.

The Subject

This is relatively an easy one, since one will often write about the things that interest them by instinct or default. But that given come with the surprise of a trap door. The implication of going to the default position being that there is a laxness in the prose style when presenting the ideas and work, the outcomes of that natural easy can be a piece or body of work that is without weight and substance. One way that I figure out how to avoid this trap was by cover subjects that I had interests in but never was competent enough to cover, like an attempt at an encyclopedic cover of market economic. It wasn’t the most arresting piece I had ever written but I was an exercise that help in that it help sharpen how critical I was about the subject, the grammatical nuances and differences between opinion piece and a formal publication, and how one wants to go on writing about, as far as feigning competence about it.

The differences are worth noting since that will affect the outcomes of the work you do. If you were to apply an irreverence style for a work that demands restraint, the result is a non-uniformity that works against the body, even taking away what good there might have been, stylistically and formatively speaking. To subvert a saying, “What’s good for the goose, might be garbage for the gander.”

Speaking of subversion and inventiveness, is it not true that the use of the two is to the benefit of the writer. In my experience, only at the beginning of one discovering their inner scribbler. It is important to test the arsenal and wear but not to the point that the use is more important than the actual work being done. So later on, you might profit from a trimming of that because by that time you’ve settled on what work for you, you’ll want to keep it as a trump card of sorts- the cream in the coffee.

And there is the matter of grammatical exhaustion and repetition. This comes later when you’ve written so much that you reach an impasse, the writer’s block. This is a very important part of the journey of being a sound writer as that signals a depletion of either your powers, you’re bored or your writer’s arsenal is down, how you’re writing etc. For the former, you’ll simple need a break, there is nothing else to be said. For the second and latter, overhaul is a must, shift the internal cargo a little, a renewal of you capacities. I have found setting some time aside to read a favourite book and author or listening to good writer talk about their careers and prose/poetic style. One such person is British Indian essayist and novelist Salman Rushdie.

You write so well. Great insights on writing.
Unrelated: What do you do when you get a writer's block? Keep writing till you get inspired or take a step back for a while? I usually read more and it sparks me to write.

Thank you, @jeanwandimi
You on the right track. I find for me it's a balance between a break, a good read and listen to a good writer and orator. That usually sets me up pretty. It's off to the races after that.

I love your writing style. I’m obviously going to have to drink more so I can compete 😜. Pass me some red wine would ya?

Passes the bottle of wine
I think you then what you need to do, @tamala. Down the lot you have, you need to catch up.
