It's February 4th...World Cancer Day
It's something we dread as one of the most horrifying experiences and news one can ever get, that of being told you have cancer or someone close to you has it.
If you have ever been affected, you know how painful and draining it can be, especially for kids both affected by or with cancer.
I did one of my university attachments in a hospital, and believe me the kids ward was the most interesting, always playing , always happy. Kids never see flaws, none cared why was one child bald, or had a scar here or there, they were all happy and playing.
One Paediatric doctor in Cape Town asked his paediatric pallative care patients what gave their life meaning.
One kid said; "I love it when mommy reads to me"
Another:"I love the way my sister hugs because it's so tight"
Another:"I love the kid next to me because he farts"
Another:"I love the nurse here because she makes it less painfull"
Another:"I love mr clown because he makes me laugh"
It's amaizing how kids see the positive in everything irrespective of the situation, it's that selflessness kids show that should give us stregthn like
One kid said:" I know mum and dad are sad because am sick, but I want them to be strong"
Another said: "Dad, be strong I will see you soon"
What parent wouldn't be moved by that?
What do these kids teach us?
- Life isn't found in a job.
- Life isn't found on facebook
- Life isn't enjoyable in hospital
- Spend time with the ones you love, make amends, kids hate fighting.
And most important is that laughter relives pain and they are a testament to that.
I would add love till it hurts. Enjoy life it is short
And kids do that very well, even when hurt they will try to makes others feel ok.
It is a pity that, as we get older, we forget so much about our behavior as a child.
Children can really teach us alot.
