Why We Should Care About Financial Sovereignty

in #writing6 years ago

Hey Steemians

So prices are tanking, and people are freaking out, I assume its only newbies because anyone who has been in this game long enough knows you could lose 95% of what you put into crypto that's the game.

When you buy a pair of shoes for $100 you get use out of it I suppose but the value in money is an instant loss unless its a collectors item and most people dont seem to care, so why crypto?

Well because we expect something back for our risk, which is fair and I'm pretty sure these up and down trends will continue for at least another 5 - 8 years before we see any sort of stability worth mentioning.

I still believe that cryptocurrency is the future of money and you can read all about it in my post - Why Blockchain & Cryptocurrency Is The Future Of Money. But that's not what I want to talk about today.

Today I want to talk about the ideas cryptocurrency has brought, a fundamental shift in thinking that will have far-reaching implications that I feel will actually drive the revolution.

What people think crypto is all about

I did not sign up for this

When we are born our parents, and the government decides things for us, when you finally can start reasoning for yourself you quickly find out, but they I have a nationality and all these people have agreed to terms on my behalf.

While it may not be too much of an issue for most you still didn't agree to it and perhaps your country is great, and you don't see a problem more power to you. I was born in apartheid South Africa, where people of colour had basically zero human rights and civil liberties, I didn't sign up for this shit? No one gave me an option, a say? Governments become tyrannical all the time, who are we to trust a place that has an obvious single point of failure.

Don't ever think we've become too smart or too advanced or too liberal not to have people be completely and irrationally evil, It can, and it will happen.

Signing your life away

Once you of age, say 18, you start by getting your national ID, Your Passport & your driver's licence. Now you're basically saying to the government, hey I know my parents signed me up but here I am of age, sound mind and body and I state that I know have all the ability to give a part of what I earn through my labour to you, my employee the country I live in.

  • When I eat I pay for it
  • When I want water I pay for it
  • When I want electricity I pay for it
  • When I want internet I pay for it
  • When I want my garbage collected I pay for it
  • When I travel I pay for it

Note: Which mind you are all being taxed

Why when I earn money do I have to pay for it, why when I start a business and service customers with my ideas and labour, you still get a cut? What makes the country so unique? You give me civil services, basic infrastructure and "freedom" and safety?

First of all that was your promise to us, you're supposed to do that, not want a cookie every time you do your damn job, and second of all, you do a shit job of it, 3rdly, we could probably figure out a way do without you doing it government, and even to the extent that we as people could do it better for ourselves

If I want to leave the country temporarily or permanently there's a ton of admin I need to get through, but I didn't sign up for this in retrospect, I wasn't given the t&cs to click agree too. Even Apple and Facebook aren't that bad, they at least are upfront what they are going to do with your data and contributions to the ecosystem so why not the government?

When its actually more about programming much more

Robbed of our rights & we don't even know it

If you did simple math, you would quickly realise that there are more than enough financial resources to supply the majority of people with a high quality of life. The real issue here is that centralised distribution of wealth always means more substantial cuts for the top and what is filtered down is a watered down promise of what could have been.

When you take these huge cuts based on self-interest, you take away decision-making power. People don't give as generously as they would to charity or to public causes because they feel they are taxed enough for those purposes.

Government saying it will take care of the less fortunate while you do your daily duties is a false promise that only benefits a few. We have the right to help our fellow man, and I'm pretty sure if we create open, decentralised funding mechanisms we could easily provide things like shelter, health care and more to help people get back on their feet and in turn, become and remain contributing members of society

National self-interest is globally suffocating

Now if all those rules weren't, enough countries have their own rules, and you can't just hang out with anyone that's not your nationality or give someone something in a foreign country. Have you tried shipping something overseas? Ordered something from another country?

Tried to give someone else access to your Apple music or Netflix? You either need to work the system or take a big hell no to your face.

Why? I should be free to trade whatever to whomever I please? Why are you limiting my trade and the ability for us all to share our resources based on imaginary lines drawn way before I was born?

Opening up new ways of thinking

So what I'm trying to say is, Crypto isn't just about moon and buy a lambo, it's not just about cheaper faster international trade it's about taking back rights we didn't even know we had. It's about breaking out of systems we no longer need. It's about pushing us forward as a species one step at a time.

What the internet has done for communication, cryptocurreny will hopefully do for the distrubution of wealth & resources!

There's a lot more

This post was starting to get a bit long, so I thought id cut myself off there, but I think you kind of get the picture here. A few years ago very few people had these kinds of thoughts because we didn't have the systems to prove the alternative use case, but now we do.

Now we have a place to post our thoughts uncensored, and while we're not there yet, a free and open discussion on alternative methods of running society need to be addressed.

Each generation was faced with some sort of decision like this to make a fundamental shift in where the world is going, and I feel this will be our generations decision to make.
