Saturday Night Live Hasn't Been Funny In A While...steemCreated with Sketch.

...But they've certainly had some funny moments in the last few years. It's been a while since I've seen a whole episode that I thought was both well-written AND hilarious all the way through. While they're usually at their funniest (maybe because it's low-hanging fruit?) during election years, there's one character I miss: Bill Hader's "Stefon.'

Stefon was like the current iteration of NYC's Party Monster, with tips and advice for people looking for the hottest, hippest new club around, often populated with the most ridiculous people and objects you could think of. Legitimately funny stuff.

But when you hear about how he and staff writer John Mulaney worked together, it just gets sweeter as Mulaney would frequently change lines right before Hader would go on stage to perform the character. Early on, these changes would often lead to Hader covering his face, which became part of Stefon's character and a way for Hader to regain composure.

But then, like in the video below, there are moments where Hader simply loses it because the concept is too ridiculous/funny to ignore. I find those are usually the best moments of the show as it means the cast is having a good time and finds the source material hilarious too.

Sort:

SNL sure has had some dark times, haven't they? Occasionally I'll stumble through a few decent sketches on YouTube but I haven't sat through an entire episode since 2002.

the talent has been fine; the writing has been especially bad. just really unfunny stuff for a long, long while.

you're not missing much, brother. trust me. a few things here and there, but otherwise...it's trash.
