After The Challenge
In the computer store yesterday, I overheard one of the clerks telling a customer about how her moms didn't want to retire. She sounded real proud when she said that her mom made good money, and absolutely hated giving that up. Got me thinking that it wasn't really only about the money but also the fear of feeling left out.
People find it hard to let go. We need that anchor to keep us believing. When that is lost we feel adrift and rootless. The clerk's mom is most likely struggling with that. She might not necessarily love her job. It might be an albatross around her neck but she needs it to feel relevant. Without it she might fade into oblivion. Maybe her kid is not even aware of that. All she seeing is the good money.
Life is always about a challenge. We feel accomplished by getting things done. Even slackers feel fulfilled in the act of slacking. Without the hustle we are hopeless and flailing. The biggest challenge is after the challenge. What to do? Where to turn? How to fly? No easy answers. The people with more than one hustle are already thinking ahead. You retire from your main gig but you still keep busy in your life. The key is not to become a relic in your environment.

STOPI suppose there are many reasons why the mother wants to keep on working. Not able to let of is one of them, the other could she genuinely derived work satisfaction from her job.
