RE: STACH Short Story Contest #18: 199 words, 5 winners, 15SBD prize pool!

There are things that I wish I never knew.
somewhere in the corner of my head, in that place between nightmares and daydreams, there lies some things I just can't forget... Or can't bear to forget

Like Sophia's flute

We’d sit under that mango tree that papa always wanted to cut down and she’d play melodies that made my heart soar. It was always kind of unusual that she played the flute that well as only men were known for the arts in our village, but then again everything about Sophia was a bit unusual.

When mama called me last night to tell me that she had passed on, that the pneumonia finally took her, all I could hear in my head were those tunes she had played in the short struggle that had been her life. Those tunes were all I could hold on to, all that made me feel like she was still here with me.

I sit here now, warm tears gliding down my face, I'm drawn back to a memory from the night before I left the village
"I think I love You" I had told her.

She just smiled, took out her flute and played me a song
