There has always been a debate between those who love planning things out in details and those who are the impulsive type of writers.
I think it depends on what you are writing too... I never plan short stories or poems, they just come to me and I keep typing till I reach the end. I start those never knowing where it will lead me to and how will it end...
It is almost impossible to do that with longer stuff - like novels, for example. For them you gotta have an outline.
The most useful book I've come across is "Save the Cat" - very comprehensive for understanding structure and outline.

Yes! Save the Cat! That's a great book for anyone wanting to learn writing! And yes, these methods are mostly for novel writing. There is little point, I think, in outlining a short story like you said.
