―¿Qué demonios significa esto? ―pregunto el general Oliver
―Lo que quiero decir es que ese mensaje fue enviado desde la Tierra, hace poco más de treinta dos mil años, no le puedo dar una fecha exacta, según nuestro calendario ―explicó el doctor Iván Wu, cuya presencia al igual que la de los representantes de la comisión del Parlamento, eran proyecciones en la sala de reuniones del alto mando de la GB01.
―Pero si es un mensaje enviado desde la Tierra, ¿por qué está siendo retrasmitido por las naves de unos alienígenas hostiles?, antes de atacar a nuestras naves ―insistió Oliver consternado.
―Eso no se lo puedo decir, sólo le puedo hablar de la naturaleza del mensaje ―explicó Wu ―. Este mensaje fue enviado, como le dije, hace ya más de treinta y dos mil años, en lo que en la antigua cronología, pre gran catástrofe, de la Tierra, corresponde al 16 de noviembre de 1974, desde el radio telescopio de Arecibo, en la Isla de Puerto Rico, lamentablemente no tengo detalles de su ubicación, lo cual de todas formas sería irrelevante, pues no debe quedar nada de él.
―Y, ¿qué contiene ese mensaje? ―continuó Oliver.
―Tiene que entender que es casi imposible encontrar información documental de todo lo anterior a la catástrofe, la mayor parte de los registros digitales se dañaron durante las horas posteriores al impacto, por el PEM y los que sobrevivieron se degradaron con el tiempo sin que existieran nuevos medios para respaldarlos. Sólo sobrevivieron algunos libros, revistas o periódicos, que fueron atesorados por contadas personas, la mayoría de las veces fueron páginas sueltas o reescritas a mano en papel deteriorado y sucio ―explicó Wu ―. Casi todo lo que podía arder tuvo que ser quemado, en los cinco a diez años de invierno que siguieron al impacto…
―Entiendo, pero no responde a mi pregunta ―intervino Oliver
―Trato de ponerlo en contexto ―continuó Wu ―. El caso es que sólo he logrado encontrar una fuente donde aparece descrito este mensaje, se trata de una serie de documentos antiguos que fue recolectada por Julia Roberti, la tía de Aurora Roberti…
―¿La misma Aurora Roberti de la que todos aprendemos en los primeros años de academia? ―intervino el senador Olaf de Sousa, que había permanecido en silencio hasta ahora.
―Así es, la historiadora que aun honramos como la iniciadora del movimiento restaurador ―dijo Wu ―. La cuestión es que, lo único que logre encontrar, fueron dos hojas rescatadas de algún libro, donde se explicaba, en antiguo español, que se trata de un mensaje de saludo, enviado a la nada, con la esperanza de que fuera captado por alguna civilización alienígena avanzada que pudiera responderlo.
―Y fue recibido por estos hostiles ―dijo Oliver.
―Eso es de suponer, según el documento, el mensaje era sólo un saludo, su contenido es una somera descripción de lo que somos, donde se sitúa la Tierra, como fue enviado y algunos detalles de como leer la información que él contiene, sólo eso.
―Pero eso, ¿cómo nos ayuda a entender a esos tipos? ―dijo el senador Simón Aristegui, otro de los integrantes de la comisión del Parlamento.
―No creo que en mucho ―continuó ―. Pero si es posible que nos ayude a saber, de donde provienen.
―¿Cómo? ―dijo Oliver
―Hasta hace poco menos de mil años, los humanos, nos hemos estado desplazando por el plano galáctico, moviéndonos a través de las estrellas que están en los brazos de la galaxia, pero hasta llegar al brazo exterior decidimos incursionar en el halo ―explicó Wu ―. Es curioso que lo hayamos hecho así pues en cualquier momento, recorriendo una distancia menor, pudimos entrar el halo. Quizá es nuestra prevaleciente forma de pensar en dos dimensiones, o la poca necesidad que hemos tenido de salir de nuestro propio entorno galáctico lo que nos ha hecho movernos de esa forma …
―Continúe doctor por favor, no divague ―intervino Oliver.
―Pues el caso es que cuando se envió el mensaje se hizo en dirección al que era denominado Gran Cúmulo Globular de Hércules. Afortunadamente existía un registro claro de la configuración de las llamadas constelaciones vistas desde la tierra y por el nombre del objeto, dedujimos que se trata del que ha sido catalogado como CG0008, un objeto del halo, que desde la Tierra es diagonal al plano galáctico ―tras decir esto se proyecto una imagen del mencionado cúmulo estelar.
―Conozco el CG0008, es un gran cúmulo globular, pero no sé cómo pueden provenir de ahí, esas son estrella de escaza o nula metalicidad, son prácticamente fósiles de los inicios del universo, no pueden existir planetas en su interior ―dijo Oliver.
―Tiene toda la razón, no soy astrofísico o astrobiólogo, pero se que los cúmulos globulares no son precisamente sitios ideales para el surgimiento de la vida, sus estrellas están muy próximas unas de otras, al menos en su núcleo, y la metalicidad, entiéndase, presencia de elementos diferentes al hidrógeno y helio, es muy poca o casi nula. Por lo que es improbable, por no decir imposible la presencia de planetas ―explicó Wu ―. Pero… ―tras hacer unos gestos con las manos, se amplió una sección del límite externo del cúmulo, donde destacaba una estrella azulada ―. Esta es la que se ha catalogado como CG0008-1232, como pueden ver, destaca frente a las restantes estrellas, su color, a diferencia de las demás, no es amarillo rojizo, se trata de una estrella que tal vez fue arrastrada por el cúmulo en su rotación alrededor del núcleo galáctico, esa estrella a diferencia de las demás posee una mayor metalicidad, su edad es de unos ocho mil millones de años, y las observaciones recientes han revelado la presencia de al menos dos planetas orbitándola.
―¿Cree usted que de ahí provengan los alienígenas? ―preguntó De Sousa.
―Según lo que he podido confirmar con varios astrónomos de la academia, la ruta recorrida por la señal dentro de la galaxia, no se cruza con ningún mundo habitado, y ese es el único objeto con el que se cruza en el halo. Si provienen de ahí, debieron recibir esa señal hace alrededor de siete u ocho mil años, la pregunta es si, sólo nos han estado esperando desde entonces. O si han vigilado nuestros pasos a través de la galaxia.

-What the hell does this mean? - asked General Oliver.

-You have to understand that it is almost impossible to find documentary information of everything before the catastrophe, most of the digital records were damaged during the hours after the impact, by the EMP and those that survived degraded over time with no new media to back them up. Only a few books, magazines or newspapers survived, which were treasured by a few people, most of the time they were single pages or rewritten by hand on deteriorated and dirty paper - Wu explained -. Almost everything that could burn had to be burned, in the five to ten years of winter that followed the impact....
-I understand, but it doesn't answer my question, -interjected Oliver.
-I'm trying to put it in context, - Wu continued -. The thing is that I have only managed to find one source where this message is described, it is a series of old documents that was collected by Julia Roberti, Aurora Roberti's aunt...
-The same Aurora Roberti we all learn about in the first years of academia? -intervened Senator Olaf de Sousa, who had remained silent until now.

-How? -said Oliver
-Until a little less than a thousand years ago, we humans have been moving around the galactic plane, moving through the stars in the arms of the galaxy, but until we reached the outer arm we decided to venture into the halo, - Wu explained -. It is curious that we did it this way because at any time, traveling a shorter distance, we could have entered the halo. Perhaps it is our prevailing two-dimensional way of thinking, or the little need we have had to leave our own galactic environment that has made us move in this way....
-Continue, doctor, please, don't digress -intervened Oliver.
-Well, the fact is that when the message was sent, it was sent in the direction of what was called the Great Globular Cluster of Hercules. Fortunately there was a clear record of the configuration of the so-called constellations as seen from Earth, and from the name of the object, we deduced that it is what has been catalogued as CG0008, a halo object, which from Earth is diagonal to the galactic plane -after saying this, an image of the mentioned star cluster was projected.
-I know CG0008, it is a large globular cluster, but I do not know how they can come from there, those are stars of little or no metallicity, they are practically fossils from the beginning of the universe, there can not be planets inside them, -said Oliver.
-You are absolutely right, I am not an astrophysicist or astrobiologist, but I know that globular clusters are not exactly ideal sites for the emergence of life, their stars are very close to each other, at least in their core, and the metallicity, meaning the presence of elements other than hydrogen and helium, is very little or almost zero. So it is unlikely, if not impossible the presence of planets - Wu explained -. But... -after making some gestures with his hands, he enlarged a section of the outer limit of the cluster, where a bluish star stood out-. This is the one that has been cataloged as CG0008-1232, as you can see, it stands out from the other stars, its color, unlike the others, is not reddish yellow, it is a star that may have been dragged by the cluster in its rotation around the galactic core, this star unlike the others has a higher metallicity, its age is about eight billion years, and recent observations have revealed the presence of at least two planets orbiting it.
-Do you think that's where the aliens came from, -De Sousa asked.
-According to what I have been able to confirm with several astronomers from the academy, the route traveled by the signal within the galaxy does not intersect with any inhabited world, and that is the only object it intersects with in the halo. If they come from there, they must have received that signal about seven or eight thousand years ago, the question is whether, they have just been waiting for us since then. Or if they've been watching our footsteps across the galaxy.
