10 Reasons to Write Even When it Feels Like Nobody's Listening

in #writing8 years ago

  1. Writing turns the noise off. It refrains you from spending most of your day replying on Twitter messages, browsing your Facebook timeline, checking the same websites every so often or just having the same boring small talk with your friends. Writing calms everything down, at least for a moment, and let you enjoy the experience of deep, intellectual thinking.

  2. Writing can be therapeutic. It's a way to vent frustrations that trouble your mind in a more or less safe environment - paper or a Steemit page. Expressive writing about thoughts and feelings caused by stressful experience may help you cope with emotional fallout you're fighting with.

  3. Seriously, if you intend to advance in a creative or technology related industry you better have some digital footprint. When your potential customer or new boss Googles your name, you don't want them to judge you by your old Myspace emo-phase blog. Plus, it's nice if you have things to talk about beyond your CV.

  4. It keeps your writing skills sharp. The only way to get better, whether for fun or on your career path is to practice your craft daily. Like any other skill, ability to express your thoughts and emotions concisely weakens over time if you're not working on it. Writing every day refines your arguments and lets you present them quickly and efficiently.

  5. Consequently, it enhances your communication skills. It helps you structure your sentences and express yourself better. In the modern-day culture, communication is often poor because we don't know how to express ourselves, verbally or written.

  6. It helps you find your true voice. Influences from our environment, school, friends make us start mimicking them and putting all these masks that hide our true personality and we forget what we believe in. When you start writing, you may have to experiment for a while, but you'll find a way to communicate in a way that's authentic and natural to you. When you let the words flow out of your head uncensored, you rediscover part of yourself you've been hiding.

  7. It stops us from chasing perfectionism. Nothing keeps us stuck like perfectionism. We hesitate to even start making something because we fear we can't make it perfect. But once you start writing and break through the initial resistance, you'll find yourself at piece no matter how bad your first writings are.

  8. Your quiver is full of ideas. When you write everyday, you start noticing things you never did before. Your brain will always be on guard for new ideas to write about, new analogies, new ways to connect different concepts and themes. When I first started blogging it was really challenging to come up with ideas I could write about. But everything is hard before it gets easy.

  9. Beauty and satisfaction of creating things. No matter what the outcome, you should never stop writing if you want to live more creative life. We need these little personal projects, away from the office. No other reason necessary but to create things. Upvotes and retweets are nice, but you shouldn't be writing because of that. Write because you love it. The moment you stop worrying about stats, your writing will start improving.

  10. We have all experienced that feeling. The feeling of "Nobody cares. Don't bother." We all have that urge from time to time to throw everything in the trash and go anonymous. It's important to resist this urge. You write because you love it. In 5 years you won't be bothered about the page views. Continue writing. Even when the blank page stares back at you and no words are coming out. Even when your articles pass by unnoticed. Even when you feel like nobody is reading.

It was fun when one day my ex-boss admitted he read my Livejournal. There was a lot of dark and some erotic stuff there, but fortunately, it had no after-effects.

He might have liked it. :) There's no real reason for consequences there, other than to look at you a bit differently. :)

This is a 100% true!! Great post :) I love writing myself, sometimes I feel It's crazy, then I am like meh! :D :D

I'm glad we agree on this. :D Yup, just keep writing. :)
